\n\tJohn Malkovich<\/a> has been highly tipped for an Oscar nomination for his performance in Martin McDonagh\u2019s CIA black comedy \u201cWild Horse Nine<\/a>,\u201d making it his first real shot at an Academy Award in three decades. The 72-year-old actor was previously nominated for best supporting actor in \u201cPlaces in the Heart\u201d (1984) and \u201cIn the Line of Fire\u201d (1993), but never won.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking at a London Film Festival<\/a> Screen Talk on Sunday, Malkovich said he views awards buzz \u201cprobably differently than I did then, because the movie business existed.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt maintained an \u2014 undeserved, in my opinion, but nevertheless \u2014 a very, very high position in the culture. And when I say \u2018undeserved,\u2019 meaning there weren\u2019t that many \u2018Chinatowns\u2019 or \u2018Godfathers\u2019 or \u2018Godfathers II,’\u201d Malkovich said. \u201cSo now, that\u2019s the only way to get people to go to the theaters, the whole thing. And that\u2019s months and months and months.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReflecting on the last time he was up for an Oscar over 30 years ago, Malkovich said the campaigning was not so intense. \u201cWhen I was nominated for an Academy Award, someone said, \u2018You\u2019re nominated for an Academy Award,’\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, Malkovich has never been a huge fan of awards ceremonies anyway, and only attended the Oscars once, when he was nominated for \u201cPlaces in the Heart.\u201d He told the London crowd that he felt quite overwhelmed by the experience. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had a manager called Phyllis Carlyle, and we were on our way to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and she was a little bit\u2026 bossy. She said, \u2018Now honey, when we get there, there\u2019s gonna be a lot of people,’\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018OK, but we can just go in a side door, right?\u2019 And she, right in my face, goes \u2018Honey! It\u2019s the Oscars, there\u2019s no side door!\u2019 So, I mean, that\u2019s kind of my native personality in the face of that kind of onslaught.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMalkovich acknowledged that Hollywood as a whole has changed quite a lot since the last time he was on the awards trail, with the advent of streaming taking over theaters. Often, he said, campaigning for a film is the only way to make the public go see it in theaters.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBoth \u2018The Killing Fields,\u2019 which was a 1984 Oscars film I think, and \u2018Places in the Heart,\u2019 they\u2019re already been out, they\u2019d already made their money, they were already successful. The same with \u2018In the Line of Fire,’\u201d he said. \u201cIt was really a different world. Now, that kind of seems to be the only way to get people to actually go to a theater.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe isn\u2019t too bothered by it, though. \u201cI\u2019m 72 years old, things change,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t really like thinking things aren\u2019t what they used to be. They just change, and you either change with them or die. And I prefer to change with them. I\u2019ll die, anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWild Horse Nine,\u201d in which he stars opposite Sam Rockwell as a veteran CIA agent, held its U.K. premiere at London Film Festival on Friday. Set shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup d\u2019etat, the two are dispatched to Easter Island, where they must confront both their dark pasts and present conspiracies.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWild Horse Nine\u201d first premiered at Venice Film Festival in September, where it received rave reviews and Malkovich took home the best actor prize. At a Venice press conference<\/a>, Malkovich humbly shrugged off the praise, saying: \u201cThat is incredibly kind. I\u2019ve had a long career, and I\u2019ve had spectacular collaborations with writers, directors and actors. I never feel in competition with any of them. For me, it\u2019s a very nice thing. But the nicest thing is the film getting attention. And the film has several terrific performers, and it\u2019s beautifully written and directed.
