BILLINGS\u2013 Construction of the nearly $1 billion building for St. Vincent Regional Hospital has reached half of the upcoming hospital\u2019s total height.<\/p>\n

Seven more floors will be added to create the final 14-floor building, which will replace the hospital\u2019s existing buildings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a huge deal,\u201d said Matt Peterson, sheet metal general foreman with Air Controls. \u201cYou still have a whole other seven floors from that top piece of iron.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never in a million years would have thought I\u2019d have been a part of a project this big,\u201d said Paul Miller, project manager for Askin Construction. \u201cIt\u2019s impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crews broke ground<\/a> for the hospital last June and estimate the project will be finished in 2029.<\/p>\n

The hospital is undergoing this dramatic change for a few reasons. According to St. Vincent director of imaging resources Karlee May, one reason is healthcare efficiency.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really an ease of workflow for our patients,\u201d said May, who gave input for the new building\u2019s floorplan and equipment. \u201cWe were very thoughtful about keeping our imaging department in one centralized location.\u201d<\/p>\n

She told MTN the hospital\u2019s current imaging services are spread out in different departments, so patients have to move to different areas of the hospital to receive results. This new hospital would bring all imaging services into one area in the building.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen patients arrive, they can show up to one place,\u201d said May. \u201cWhich means that they\u2019re going to be able to have faster diagnoses, easier procedures done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another reason for the new hospital is structural issues with the old buildings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the infrastructure, just the age of the facility,\u201d said St. Vincent Chief Operating Officer Dustin Strandell. \u201cIt just made more sense to replace because\u2026 the operational disruptions to try and rebuild an existing facility are huge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strandell told MTN the old hospital buildings will be knocked down when construction of the new building wraps up.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then we\u2019ll redevelop our campus,\u201d said Strandell. \u201cA lot of it will be parking.
