For the most part, Evo France 2026 seemed pretty hype. But there was one moment where the crowd went instantly and awkwardly silent.

During the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls top 8, developers revealed that the Jane Foster version of Thor, Venom and Jubilee<\/a> will be the three upcoming fighters arriving as DLC in Season 1. After the trailer, the audience was asked<\/a> who was going to main Thor when she comes out in 2027.<\/p>\n

Despite the awkwardness at Evo France 2026, it does seem like these are alright choices for Season 1. A lot of y’all had positive things to say about the characters, noting that it seems like developers want to add unique variations of popular characters for more dynamic movesets, similar to Phoenix Cyclops<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The issue isn’t really the lineup. It’s the size of the lineup.<\/p>\n

\nFighting games need faster release schedules to survive
\n <\/p>\n

It’s no secret that Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has been a huge debate in the FGC. I’ve even speculated myself that Marvel Tokon could be the next game to bite the dust<\/a>, even though I’m not saying it’s my own desire.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

One of the reasons for its astonishingly cursed launch was the tiny roster. It seems like fighting games keep making this mistake time and time again of coming out incomplete. And the FGC is sick of it. We were extremely disappointed with 2XKO for many reasons, including its small starting roster, which eventually led to its rapid demise<\/a>.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Even worse, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 fighter. With four characters to a team, it’s clearly going to be an issue if you only have 20 playable characters. That gets old quite fast.<\/p>\n

But those who had faith in Marvel Tokon from the beginning continued to point to the DLC. Every fighting game has DLC. I mean, they have to since they start out incomplete.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

However, it was soon confirmed that devs were giving just four fighters in Season 1. And Season 1 is likely going to last until Summer 2027. That’s basically a year from now, and in that time we are only getting four more characters.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

It’s hard to feel positive about that. The DLC route only works if, you know, you get DLC. The hype surrounding Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s DLC fighters was because the roster was already massive to begin with, and then we got new DLC one after the other. Nobody is hype about getting Jubilee all the way in Summer 2027.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

We saw it in action plenty of times. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves had a lot of hype upon launch and had an incredible main stage debut at Evo Las Vegas 2025. But the game fell off pretty quickly. And even devs knew why.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

I spoke with Producer Shinya Tamaki earlier this year, and he admitted that the lack of major content updates in the game’s launch year caused players to leave. It wasn’t their intention to release content so slowly, and claimed there were other things they had to prioritize. But it came at the price of the FGC losing interest.<\/p>\n

\nFatal Fury: City of the Wolves couldn\u2019t say the same for a while. And devs admit some of that is their fault. For a while, the game didn\u2019t receive many major content updates, leading to player departures. Tamaki explained that it wasn\u2019t the team\u2019s intention to do so, but it took around a year to optimize the development pipeline.
\n <\/p>\n

“But now we have a one-character-per-month update schedule. It\u2019s a very, very fast pace. And along with those characters, you\u2019re releasing a stage, music, new gameplay, character balance\u2026 We have a new update with new content, and we\u2019ve seen people coming back,\u201d said Tamaki.
\n \n<\/p>\n

The fighting game scene is clearly sick of new games coming out without a complete roster. The only remedy is for developers to really push after the release to complete the game. Avatar Legends: The Fighting game gave players what they wanted with its latest update<\/a> and has since seen massive support.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls released with a tiny roster and seems to be dripping out DLC fighters at an extremely excruciatingly slow pace. If you want the FGC to feel like you don’t care about them, that’s the way to do it.<\/p>\n


\n <\/p>\n

Do I truly think that Season 1 having four characters is the reason that Marvel Tokon may fail? No. But I think it does play a part. I think it’s not going to really keep consistent hype without giving players stuff to be hyped about.<\/p>\n
