For the rest of the show, Love sat in place, singing along but ceding his usual lead vocals and master of ceremonies roles to others. Stamos and Christian Love helped Mike to his feet, and then, on either side of him, held his arms aloft in the air in a triumphant pose, until the curtains closed in front of them.

What transpired in-between the curtain raiser and final pose was much like what had gone down the previous night in Cincinnati, at the first public gig the Beach Boys had done since canceling a slew of dates beginning in July.

The big difference was, after the Cincinnati show, viral video of Love’s frail state led music fans to spread comments across social media about whether Love and his organization were aware that the time was coming for him to retire. But after Stamos’ public comments on his social accounts Sunday, which made it clear that no one considered this a sustainable way to keep touring, the mood among fans changed, from one of chagrin and alarm to a greater sense of poignance and appreciation.

The Beach Boys’ touring machine has been going nearly nonstop for the last 65 or so years, as Stamos and Christian Love noted in the intro, driven by Mike as one of pop music’s most inveterate and even seemingly compulsive tourers. Now, there are only three dates listed on the group’s official website, the next being Nov. 11 at Walt Disney World. Whether those dates will be fulfilled is anyone’s guess, but Stamos’ statement that this could be the last time certainly left the impression that, barring a sudden rebound in Love’s health, no one should bet he will be back on the road.

Could the Beach Boys go on as a touring entity without him as the ringleader? Fans have already theorized different ways the music could continue to be toured without Love’s active participation. A “Beach Boys friends and family” setup with Stamos, Christian Love and the current band carrying on is one hypothetical scenario, although touring without any original members could cut down on the group’s draw. It also certainly doesn’t escape fans’ notice that Al Jardine is still in robust shape and out actively touring with Brian Wilson’s former road band… and indeed, he was performing Sunday night in SoCal with former members Bruce Johnston and David Marks sitting in. Whether Jardine and potentially one or both of the others would want to come back under the Beach Boys’ official aegis is unknown (and Johnston, who was in Love’s band till earlier this year, had announced that he was firmly quitting the road).

What afflictions are currently affecting Love have not been made public, although he did speak about his health issues back in June, writing: “Losing my sister, Maureen, on the first anniversary of cousin Brian’s death, combined with my ongoing recovery from what started out as bronchitis, followed by COVID, has taken both an emotional and physical toll on me. I feel stronger every day physically, but I am heartbroken emotionally. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else than with our audience. In personal appearances in the spring and summer months, he was able to speak at length, lucidly and sometimes poignantly, whether it was at a Grammy Museum appearance promoting the “Love You” boxed set (covered by Variety here) or a Capitol Records party celebrating the 60th anniversary of “Pet Sounds” (about which Variety interviewed him, here). The audience in Nashville — with some crowd members saying they had been coming to see the band since 1963 — clearly felt the sense of occasion, and maybe the paradox that it is possible to have an endless summer and an autumn, too.

Stamos had posted a 400-word statement on Instagram Sunday, which Variety reprinted in a previous story.
