The death of a 39-year-old Franklin County woman has marked Pennsylvania\u2019s sixth measles-associated death in 2026, according to county officials.<\/p>\n

The Franklin County Coroner\u2019s Office said it investigated the woman\u2019s death Saturday. She had several underlying health conditions, including a recent measles diagnosis for which she received treatment. <\/p>\n

According to the coroner\u2019s office, the case meets the Pennsylvania Department of Health\u2019s definition of a “measles-associated death.” It is the first such death reported in Franklin County in many years. <\/p>\n

What does ‘measles-associated’ mean? <\/p>\n

The state Department of Health defines a confirmed measles-associated death<\/a> as one occurring within 30 days of symptom onset in a person who had clinical evidence of measles, a positive laboratory test and no unrelated cause of death. The classification does not necessarily mean measles was the sole cause of death. <\/p>\n

The coroner\u2019s office said it would not release additional information that could identify the woman, citing privacy laws and respect for her family.<\/p>\n

“Our office is bound by laws that limit what can be shared publicly, and families deserve the dignity to mourn in private,” the office said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Coroner urges caution and vigilance<\/p>\n

County officials urged health care professionals, first responders and residents to follow guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n

“Caution and vigilance are key to our success in the treatment of this disease and its aftereffects,” the coroner’s office said.<\/p>\n

The Department of Health says measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. State health officials say vaccination provides the best protection against the disease. <\/p>\n
