Having met in the Andalusian capital at a party, they sought a residence in the historic center, near the Cathedral—one that felt distinctly Sevillian.

Ricardo Labougle for VERANDA

White Macael marble columns and old local lanterns punctuate the patio. Stone floors, a fountain, and shady plants in clay pots offer a cool escape in the summer.

For decades, the estate had belonged to the Núñezes, a prominent livestock-breeding family who, in the 1980s, commissioned heritage architect Rafael Manzano Martos (known as Manzano). Renowned for his Mudejar style, he was asked to divide the property into separate dwellings while preserving the common areas typical of an aristocratic home—such as the carriage entrance, staircase, and central colonnaded patio with marble columns.

When the apartment came into Raúl and Manuel’s hands, they entrusted the renovation to de Moya, who had studied under Manzano at the University of Seville. Raúl gave de Moya clear guidance: “I told him I wanted something that reflected his style while also paying tribute to a decorator I deeply admire—Jaime Parladé. The pair studied historic patrician houses in Seville, such as Casa de Pilatos, a 15th- to 16th-century palace that blends Gothic Mudejar and Renaissance influences, compiling a library of details to adapt to a more modest home.

Features include Manises-style tiles, convent-style painted doors, a warm palette, and neo-Mudejar elements. The decor reflects a provincial fascination with English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish furniture, as well as Anglo-Saxon textiles, influenced by 19th-century British wine-growing families who settled in Jerez de la Frontera and mingled with Seville’s elite.

De Moya chose to preserve the original, albeit unusual, layout spread across three levels. “The apartment feels like a dollhouse—almost like a Sevillian-style cottage,” he says. “Its layout enhances the sense of living in a small, charming house.”

Ricardo Labougle for VERANDA

Living room seating features a Louis XVII daybed covered in indigo florals and checks, along with a yellow velvet sofa (GP&J Baker).
