A suspect, identified as 36-year-old Luis Antonio Morales, was found later at an apartment complex in the area.

“Officers followed the suspect to an upstairs apartment and began knocking on the door, announcing themselves as police,” Pueblo police said in a release. “The suspect opened the door, and an exchange of gunfire occurred.”

Morales died in the gunfire, police said, and two officers were injured. This week, the Pueblo Police Department provided an update on the officers’ conditions, writing on Facebook that Officer Justin Ortiz received a graze wound to the ankle.

Officer Jonathon Woehler was shot in both legs and was taken to a hospital. He was released on Monday and “is continuing to recover,” the release said.

Nearly 24 hours later, a Thornton police officer was wounded in a shootout in a residential neighborhood. The suspect in that incident, 37-year-old Luis Arebalo, remained on the loose Tuesday morning.

The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday after officers responded to a report of an “unwanted person” in the 12800 block of Ulster Street near the Adams County Fairgrounds, according to a police news release.

Arebalo fired multiple shots at the officers as they spoke with the person who called for help, police say. The injured officer was taken to a hospital with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening. An officer shot at Arebalo, but it is unclear whether the officer’s gunfire struck him.

Arebalo is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing approximately 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and dark-colored pants. He is considered armed and dangerous.

There were two incidents Monday during which law enforcement officers shot people. The first took place in Adams County, where a sheriff’s deputy responded to a suspected arson at a Super 8 motel.

Just before 7 a.m., deputies located a man who they believed matched the arson suspect’s description about a mile north of the motel, near 96th Avenue and I-76 Frontage Road. One of the deputies shot the man, though no details were provided as to what led up to the shooting.

It was not clear whether the man was armed when he was shot. Investigators found a knife at the scene, Sgt. Shea Haney said.

The deputy was not hurt and the victim, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to a hospital, Haney said. The extent of the man’s injuries was not clear Tuesday.

On Monday evening, Colorado State University police shot and injured an armed man who officials said was “acting erratically” on the Fort Collins campus.

CSU police received a report about a man near Newton Plaza on the main campus around 5:35 p.m., university officials said in a campus safety report. The man, holding a handgun, advanced toward the responding officer, school officials said.

“Gunfire occurred,” CSU officials wrote, with the officer shooting the man and immediately rendering first aid.
