LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — A historic Hill City home that once served as an orphanage for boys is set to take on a new role as a recovery facility for women battling addiction.

The faith-based non-profit, Eagles Nest Regeneration Program, plans to transform the 1800s-era house on Cabell Street into a recovery center designed to support women from the start of their sobriety.

“This will be the site that they come in day one of recovery and, you know, walk out with a new lease on life,” said Jason Rickards, director of Eagles Nest.

For Rickards and Eagles Nest founder Robbie Mattox, the building represents more than its history.

“I saw a woman walking into a house that everything about the house told her that she was worthwhile, that she had value, that she meant something,” Mattox said about what he envisioned for the women who will be cared for in the home.

The facility is expected to house 20 women. Plans for the center include a breakfast nook and residential kitchen, a doctor’s office, classrooms, a library, and a local food bank and commercial kitchen that will be staffed by the women.

The project is expected to cost nearly $1.3 million, funded through donations and grants. Eagles Nest hopes to have the center fully operational by summer 2028.
