To military parents who are frustrated because they can\u2019t get access to their teenagers\u2019 medical records<\/a>, the U.S. Army Surgeon General<\/a> has a message: \u201cWe share your concern,\u201d and are working to address it.<\/p>\n

Currently, parents don\u2019t have access to a child\u2019s medical records from the time they turn 13, \u201cbased on current departmental policy,\u201d Lt. Gen. Mary K. Izaguirre said Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Association of the United States Army.<\/a> <\/p>\n

In addition, children don\u2019t have ID cards to sign in to the Defense Enrollment Eligibility System<\/a> (DEERS), she said. Children must be at least 18 to log in to the system.<\/p>\n

The question of parents\u2019 access came up during a family forum at AUSA. Izaguirre said the issue is one of her husband\u2019s favorite topics, and \u201cI share his passion for it,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

For now, parents must go to the patient administration offices at their military treatment facilities and have their teenage children sign consent forms to give parents permission for access to their medical records. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a barrier,\u201d Izaguirre said, adding that \u201cwe\u2019ve been working with the [Defense Health Agency], and the [Department of Health and Human Services]\u201d to address the hurdle.<\/p>\n

The issue stems from privacy laws and has come up in various settings with military families. <\/p>\n

Researchers with the organization Feedback were \u201csurprised at how often this came up, not just one parent at one base,\u201d said Erin Domagola, the research director at the organization. Feedback analyzed comments received in the Federal Register, following a Defense Department solicitation in March for comments and suggestions from military families on how DoD could improve their quality of life. <\/p>\n

Feedback uses applied anthropology, behavioral science and digital ethnography to understand what people experience and why.<\/p>\n

The company independently analyzed Federal Register military family comments from 2024 to 2026 about quality of life. While there were a relatively small number of comments overall \u2014117 in 2026 \u2014 it does provide a window into some of the concerns and suggestions, the researchers said.<\/p>\n
