LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The latest drought map for Virginia was released on Thursday, and it shows some improvement across central and southwest Virginia.

The improvement is thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Isaias, which brought much-needed rain to the area over the weekend.

Below is a comparison of the drought monitor this week compared to last week.

DROUGHT MONITOR LAST WEEK

Drought Monitor for the week of Oct. 8. (WSET)

DROUGHT MONITOR THIS WEEK

Drought Monitor for the week of October 15. (WSET)

The updated map shows the city of Lynchburg now in a moderate drought compared to severe last week.

Campbell County saw its area under extreme drought shrink, though severe drought conditions continue to affect most of the county.

The area of Southside under extreme drought is also smaller. Last week, more than half of Pittsylvania County was under extreme drought. This week, only the southwest corner is under extreme, with the rest of the county under severe drought conditions.

Henry County also saw some improvement, with the area under moderate and severe drought shrinking.

Almost all of Bedford County improved from severe drought conditions to moderate drought.

To the north of Lynchburg, Amherst County is no longer in severe drought. The county is now under moderate drought or dry conditions. All of Nelson County is seeing dry conditions.

To the west, Botetourt, Rockbridge, Roanoke and Montgomery counties saw drought improvement.

The only part of our area not to see much improvement was Halifax and Charlotte counties.

Despite the improvement, it will take a lot more rain to bust the drought in Virginia, and the forecast for the next week is looking mostly dry.

LYNCHBURG, Va.
