Cats are the domestic animals most frequently found to be rabid due to lower vaccination rates compared with dogs.

What are the signs of rabies in animals?

Signs of rabies in animals can include abnormal or aggressive behavior; lethargy, weakness or paralysis; self-mutilation; seizures; excessive salivation; and difficulty breathing or swallowing. Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease caused by a virus carried in the saliva of infected animals. It can spread to people and other animals through a bite or when saliva is introduced into an open wound or the eyes, nose or mouth.

How effective is treatment after rabies exposure?

Rabies primarily affects the central nervous system and can lead to severe brain disease and death if medical care is not received before symptoms start. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says prompt treatment following a rabies exposure is nearly 100% effective at preventing the disease.

Senior Digital Editor/Producer, WCVB.com MARION, Mass. — A raccoon found in Marion, Massachusetts, has tested positive for rabies,…

[34
14144,29476,97,29477,63127,57262,370895,370896,2001,179511,47608,370897,97532,45430,39142,617,311218,12268,7241,67844,19674,370898,28123,168417
post-883572","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-animal","tag-disease-control","tag-health","tag-health-official","tag-lethargy","tag-marion","tag-marion-animal-control","tag-marion-board-of-health","tag-massachusetts","tag-massachusetts-department-of-public-health","tag-paralysis","tag-point-road","tag-rabid-raccoon","tag-rabie","tag-rabies","tag-raccoon","tag-saliva","tag-seizure","tag-sign","tag-skunk","tag-town","tag-water-tower","tag-wcvb","tag-weakness
["GET
