(WPDE) \u2014 SPORTFIVE, the organization that facilitates and operates the Grand Strand\u2019s annual PGA Tour event, announced Steve Mays was appointed as the new tournament director for the Myrtle Beach Classic &#8220;effective immediately,&#8221; according to a release from PGA.<\/p>\n<p>This news comes as ONEflight and PGA part ways, according to Mays and Visit Myrtle Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, ABC 15 reported a trio of lawsuits that accused ONEflight International, the tour&#8217;s previous sponsor, of being &#8216;the hallmark of a Ponzi Scheme.&#8217; These lawsuits alleged ONEflight encouraged customers to make increasingly large prepaid, nonrefundable deposits for future flight hours while the company\u2019s liabilities for those prepaid hours exceeded its ability to deliver the flights.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said Mays, who brings more than 30 years of leadership experience, will now oversee the planning, operations, execution of and growth of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT: <a href=\"https:\/\/wpde.com\/news\/local\/lawsuit-accuses-myrtle-beach-classic-sponsor-as-the-hallmark-of-a-ponzi-scheme-golf-club-vendors-charters-oneflight-private-jets-colorado-south-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lawsuit accuses Myrtle Beach Classic sponsor of being &#8216;the hallmark of a Ponzi Scheme&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mays previously served as President of Founders Group International, one of the nation\u2019s largest golf ownership and operating organizations. Here, officials said he oversaw 21 Myrtle Beach-area golf courses. He also spent 13 years with Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve spent my career helping grow golf in Myrtle Beach, and it\u2019s an honor to take on this role,\u201d Mays said. \u201cThe Myrtle Beach Classic has quickly become an important part of our community and a showcase for one of the premier golf destinations in the world. I look forward to working with our partners, sponsors, volunteers and community stakeholders to continue building a first-class event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Myrtle Beach Classic returns to The Dunes Golf and Beach Club on May 13-16, 2027. <\/p>\n<p>Previous years have crowned Chris Gotterup, Ryan Fox, and Brandt Snedeker as champions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.
