Nature is such an extraordinary environment for us all and, in this tech-driven, digital age, spending quality time outdoors has never been more important.

“This project is about exploring how nature, creativity and relationships can best support the healthy development of babies and young children. We believe that taking a whole-child approach is important, and nature becomes a wonderful place to explore how we can successfully nurture the social and emotional skills that underpin lifelong health and wellbeing.

The Princess of Wales visits Cornwall to learn more about nature-based environments (Image: Josh Shinner)

“My hope is that through this practical, nature-based research, we can build supportive environments that help make nature more accessible, benefiting babies, young children and their families across the UK.”

The princess recorded the footage during yesterday’s trip to Cornwall, where she explored the possibilities of nature-based learning in the earliest years of life. The Prince of Wales joined her on the outing, showing strong enthusiasm for the initiative, particularly given his role running the Duchy of Cornwall, which is backing this new program.

Kensington Palace has unveiled three new photographs of the princess, captured by royal photographer Josh Shinner in Cornwall on Thursday, timed to align with today’s announcement. Dressed in the same fair isle jumper and dark green jacket, all the pictures were shot in a woodland setting.

The princess has tasked The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood with advancing fresh research into how nature-rich environments can support the social and emotional development of babies and young children throughout the UK, establishing the groundwork for a new program scheduled to begin next year.

Middleton announced her new initiative (Image: Getty)

This initiative, backed by founding partner The Duchy of Cornwall, will integrate research, practical testing and real-world learning to deepen our understanding of how nature, creativity and relationships can help children develop the social and emotional skills that underpin lifelong health and wellbeing. Today’s announcement follows fresh polling data, commissioned by the Centre, revealing that 84% of parents believe time spent in nature supports their child’s wellbeing and development, yet only 33% say their child experiences nature daily.

Nearly two-thirds (62%) wish their child could spend more time outdoors overall, and 56% desire increased nature-based activities through childcare and educational settings.

The initiative brings together two of the princess’s key priorities: early childhood development and the natural environment.

She has been working to highlight the significance of a child’s first five years for more than a decade, and earlier this year she traveled to Reggio Emilia in Italy to study the city’s approach to early years education.

The Princess is promoting nature based learning (Image: Getty)

She also toured a forest kindergarten in Denmark in 2022, where she observed firsthand how outdoor learning settings can enhance young children’s growth.

These experiences have shaped The Princess’s expanding focus on how surroundings, relationships, creativity and connection combine to influence children’s formative years and long-term wellbeing.

Nature has emerged as an increasingly central theme for Catherine, after she discovered comfort in outdoor activities during her cancer treatment. Since that time, she has worked to emphasize the advantages of nature for wellness and human connection.

Through initiatives like the Mother Nature series and her observations following her trip to Italy, Her Royal Highness has emphasized the significance of establishing environments where people, especially children, can flourish.

This initiative will unite researchers, early childhood professionals, charitable organizations and environmental groups to gain deeper insight into how children’s exposure to nature can foster healthy social and emotional growth during their formative years.

The Princess of Wales has launched a new initiative to examine how nature can support a child’s healthy…

[47
192,79
post-885166","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science
["GET
