John Goodman<\/a>\u00a0is getting real about the downside of starring in one of the biggest sitcoms of all time.<\/p>\n

During a conversation with the\u00a0SAG-AFTRA Foundation<\/a>, the 74-year-old actor admitted he was \u201cfrightened\u201d by the level of fame he achieved following his starring role in \u201cRoseanne\u201d and other projects.<\/p>\n

When asked what his biggest pitfalls were that he wished he would have foreseen, he replied he wished he would have understood fame better.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I would have taken to it better,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u00a0didn\u2019t. I was frightened \u2026 I\u2019m my own worst enemy, by far.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in the conversation with interviewer Joe Neumaier, Goodman was asked about the way his career picked up in the late \u201880s and early \u201990s, and how he shifted from being a more independent actor to being a celebrity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt changed,’\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s when I was told, \u2018You better get a publicist and get a hold of this stuff.\u2019 And I just \u2026 I had a bad time dealing with how famous I got all of a sudden, and just [said], \u2018Well, that ain\u2019t me.’\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cIt took a long time to deal with it, so I got that out of the way. But just the negotiations you have to go through, the things you have to do to sell a film, they\u2019re not ideal, but they need to be done. People put a lot of money into these things, and let\u2019s help each other out and get this done. They have a job to do, and you have to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n

At another point in the interview, Goodman shared he agreed to do \u201cRoseanne\u201d \u201cto quit living out of a suitcase,\u201d adding that he \u201chit it off with [Roseanne Barr] immediately, to the point where, and not in an arrogant way, I just knew when I left that I had the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

John Goodman, 74, admitted he was frightened by the sudden fame he achieved after starring in \u2018Roseanne,\u2019 calling himself his own worst enemy. FilmMagic<\/p>\n

\u201cRoseanne\u201d aired on ABC for nine seasons from 1988 to 1997, releasing 222 episodes in its first run and\u00a0winning four Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time, the hot shows in television were all wealth porn, like \u2018Dynasty,\u2019 \u2018Dallas,\u2019 stuff like that. And we were sober reality,\u201d he said. \u201cRose said something early on that \u2018just because we\u2019re poor doesn\u2019t make us stupid.\u2019 And the reason that family stayed together was because of laughter and obvious love. And I think that showed on the screen in a real way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following his time on \u201cRoseanne,\u201d Goodman starred in many successful movies, including \u201cThe Flintstones,\u201d \u201cThe Big Lebowski,\u201d \u201cMonsters Inc.\u201d and others, before returning to the role of Dan Conner in the \u201cRoseanne\u201d reboot in 2018.<\/p>\n

While successful, the reboot only lasted one season, as it was quickly canceled after\u00a0Barr made<\/a> a racist statement\u00a0on social media in reference to President Barack Obama\u2019s senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett.<\/p>\n

Just a few weeks later, ABC announced that the show\u2019s cast would be returning for a new spin-off, \u201cThe Conners,\u201d without Barr. The show aired for 112 episodes from 2018 to 2025, with Goodman filming that and \u201cThe Righteous Gemstones\u201d at the same time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think [the \u2018Roseanne\u2019 reboot] was going to go beyond the initial five or six episodes. I thought it\u2019d be a one-off thing, and then we got picked up, and Roseanne got fired,\u201d he told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2025. \u201cI thought that was it, and as soon as they dismissed the cast, I picked up \u2018Righteous Gemstones.\u2019 Then we got to do the show again as \u2018The Conners.\u2019 I didn\u2019t know how long it would last, but I sure enjoyed it while I was there.\u201d<\/p>\n

When speaking to the outlet, he also shared that he and Barr\u00a0had not spoken\u00a0\u201cfor about seven or eight years\u201d at the time, adding \u201cI\u2019d rather doubt if she wants to talk to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barr told listeners of her podcast,\u00a0\u201cThe Roseanne Barr Podcast<\/a>,\u201d in March that she felt \u201cbetrayed\u201d by Goodman due to his decision to scale back his appearances on the show in the later seasons.<\/p>\n
