Then the researchers followed them up for around 14 years.

At the end of the follow-up, they discovered that loneliness and social isolation were significantly associated with fewer years free from all seven of the chronic diseases.

“Interestingly, the study found that loneliness has a greater detrimental effect than social isolation on both physical and mental health,” explains Manisha Parulekar, M.D., chief of the division of geriatrics and co-director of the Center for Memory Loss and Brain Health at Hackensack University Medical Center. “It also found differences in how loneliness and social isolation affect men versus women.”

Specifically, researchers found that 50-year-old women who experienced both loneliness and social isolation had roughly 2.5 fewer years without those physical chronic diseases compared to those who didn’t, and men of the same demographic had roughly two fewer disease-free years.

And the effects on mental health were even greater. In general, women who were lonely and isolated had nearly four fewer years without anxiety and depression, while men had nearly six fewer years.

Loneliness appeared to pose the most risk; in the study, the effects of social isolation waned if people practiced other healthy lifestyle habits like eating a balanced diet and exercising. This implies that the emotional baggage of loneliness is particularly weighty—something that can’t be covered up by a routine or supplement.

“A person can be in a large family, or be part of a club or organization, surrounded by many people, yet feel alone,” explains Dr. Parulekar. “They feel they’re not truly part of the group. Loneliness can also be felt in a relationship with another person—a friend, a relative, or a partner—where there is no bond or passion or affection.”

Add Prevention as a preferred source in your Google search results.

Use your Google account to add this to your settings.

Add to Google settings

It’s important to note that researchers looked at life expectancy free of major chronic diseases rather than simply the total number of years someone lived. “The findings suggest that loneliness and social isolation are associated with fewer healthy years, but they do not prove that loneliness directly causes an individual to die earlier,” notes Jay Luthar, M.D., longevity doctor, founder of Lutanen Health, and instructor at Harvard Medical School. And because this was an observational study, other factors that might contribute to both loneliness and poorer health should be considered, including a person’s socioeconomic and ability status.

How loneliness, health, and lifespan are connected

Researchers didn’t outline exactly how loneliness and isolation may have affected participants’ health—they just identified the link. But our experts say there are several ways the two could be connected.

One is the chronic stress that loneliness can trigger. “Feeling persistently disconnected from others may contribute to prolonged stress responses, changes in stress hormones, and inflammatory processes that could affect cardiovascular and metabolic health over time,” explains Dr. Luthar. Basically, persistent stress can lead to inflammation, which is a major contributor to the development of many chronic diseases.

Loneliness may also influence everyday health behaviors. “People who feel disconnected may have more difficulty maintaining consistent sleep, exercising regularly, eating well, or keeping up with preventive healthcare,” says Dr. Luthar.

Then there is the mental health component. “Loneliness and depression can reinforce one another, potentially creating a cycle in which psychological distress affects physical health and physical health challenges make social engagement more difficult,” he adds. If a person doesn’t have strong relationships, they may be lacking the help they need to stay healthy—physically and mentally.

How to prevent loneliness and isolation

“I would encourage people to think about connection as something we practice consistently, rather than something we wait to feel,” suggests Lindsey Rae Ackerman, L.M.F.T., a licensed therapist and chief clinical officer at Your Behavioral Health.

Here are some of her actionable tips for staying connected:

Create recurring opportunities for socialization, such as attending a weekly meal, walking group, class, faith community, volunteer activity, or a standing call with someone you care about.Focus on connection quality over quantity. Notice when loneliness leads to avoidance. The instinctual reaction to rejection or disconnection can sometimes be to withdraw further.Seek support from a mental health professional when loneliness is persistent.

“Loneliness should not be confused with being alone,” Ackerman adds. “Solitude can be restorative and chosen. Loneliness is the distress that occurs when there is a gap between the connection someone has and the connection they need.”

The bottom line

Loneliness and social isolation are different, and they can have separate effects on health, which means they also may require separate interventions. “It is helpful to know that healthy habits may offset the risk for isolated people, but not lonely ones,” says Dr. Parulekar. “Loneliness itself may need direct attention.”

5 min read Key Points A new study found that loneliness and social isolation shaved years off people’s…

[34
208705,7789,371695,874,982,97,265529,873,221158,371694,316394
post-886060","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-collection-health-news","tag-content-type-news-explainer","tag-contentid-af4204ad-5540-469b-b7fc-baa7b10caf91","tag-displaytype-standard-article","tag-hasproduct-true","tag-health","tag-issyndicated-false","tag-locale-us","tag-read_time-5","tag-shorttitle-loneliness-could-cost-years-of-good-health","tag-sponsored-false
["GET
