"Scott

Bugsy the pelican, a beloved fixture at the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat, has kicked the bucket, shuffled off his mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible, we’ve confirmed.

Bugsy was brought to Flamingo’s habitat in Sept. 2012, along with another rescue, Virginia. Virginia passed in 2021.

We’ll try to keep this upbeat despite the sad news if that’s OK. We sometimes use humor as an adaptive coping mechanism, employing cognitive reframing and emotional regulation to process grief and mitigate psychological distress. Oh, like you don’t.

""Whenever we visited the habitat, we would ask, “Why the long face?” The pelicans reacted pretty much the same way you just did.

Caesars Entertainment confirmed the loss of Bugsy, saying he passed away in July. Yes, it was a few months ago, but as you are well aware, news isn’t news until we say so. Vegas Matt was kicked out of Venetian in November 2025. We reported it in August 2026, at which point it became international news. Please keep up.

As mentioned, Bugsy was in the care of Flamingo for 14 years and was the longest-living rehab animal at the popular free habitat.

Bugsy had a pre-existing condition and ultimately died from kidney failure. Given the fact he lived in Vegas, we figured it would be his liver.

A Caesars rep said, “He was very well cared for and loved by the team, and we are all going to miss him.”

Upon hearing about the death of Bugsy, we dove headlong into our archives and found a video of a feeding at the habitat.

That video is helpful in trying to determine which of the pelicans is Bugsy, because males and females look similar, but males are larger.

We worked at Caesars Entertainment for several years and would occasionally raise concerns about animals being in a habitat on the grounds of a casino, but can confirm the animals are, indeed, well cared for and loved by the habitat team.

""Bugsy and Virginia back in 2013.

For the number of people who pass through Flamingo, there have been relatively few incidents with the animals. In 2012, an exotic bird was killed by two vacationing law students. The bird was a 14-year-old helmeted guinea fowl named Turk. Yes, we randomly took a photo of Turk prior to the WTF.

""People who harm defenseless animals are the worst kind of humans next to timeshare salespersons.

Most recently, a visitor from Canada kidnapped a flamingo named Peachy. The bird survived and is back in the habitat. The process of giving this asshat what’s coming to him is still in the works.

Maybe that firing squad in Texas would do two-fer. https://t.co/cOrGVXlTfk

— Vital Vegas (@VitalVegas) October 15, 2026

Your outrage is fully warranted.

Anyway, Bugsy!

We forgot to mansplain that Bugsy and Virginia were named after Las Vegas mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and his girlfriend, Virginia Hill. No, Bugsy didn’t name the Flamingo after Hill’s long legs. Billy Wilkerson, founder of “The Hollywood Reporter” and the original developer of Flamingo, named it.

Bugsy and Virginia arrived at the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat on Sept. 18, 2012.

They’d been rescued and rehabilitated by the Pacific Wildlife Project after becoming entangled in fishing nets in Southern California. Everyone in SoCal eventually moves to Las Vegas.

Bugsy and Virginia’s injuries included damage to their wings. They could only extend one wing each, so they wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild and ended up at Flamingo.

""With pelicans, evolution prioritized function over aesthetics, all due respect.

Because the pelicans were captured in the wild, we don’t know their ages, but Bugsy was likely 17 or 18. Pelicans can live to be 25-30 years in captivity, but health issues obviously play a part in their lifespan. Plus, smoking and drinking can reduce their lifespans by as much as 12%. Unfiltered cigarettes are the worst. And don’t get us started with cigars.

Shout-out to cognitive reframing and emotional regulation!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, especially if you were a Bugsy fan, and we’ve spoken to several in recent days.

Flamingo’s habitat isn’t universally loved by animal advocates, but the inhabitants tend to live more comfortable lives than their counterparts in the wild. They are well fed and get medical care. A bird with a bum wing would last a few days in the wild.

""Much love to the keepers. Trust us, you don’t do this gig for the money.

Honestly, they’re birds, they have nothing better to do. Oh, and animals in sanctuaries aren’t always looking over their shoulders for predators, other than drunk tourists.

We trust Caesars Entertainment has occasional meetings about the habitat. It’s a hard cost in an era of belt-tightening where free attractions are often shut down to bolster the bottom line. Hang in there, Bellagio Conservatory!

Caesars could easily pull the plug on its habitat, claiming pressure from animal advocates or “changing public attitudes” toward keeping wild animals in captivity, sort of the reasoning circuses have used.

But Flamingo’s Wildlife habitat is a pleasant departure from the din of the casino. There’s an educational aspect (see the video below), and a number of birds in the habitat can simply fly away if they’d like. Many do. (Like the mallards mentioned in the video.) The namesake flamingos can’t fly; their wings are clipped.

All this filler is to try and avoid feeling sad about the passing of Bugsy, of course.

Here’s another video featuring Bugsy.

Today we learned all the flamingos at Flamingo are in their 30s and 40s! Two flamingos, Blackjack and Pink Floyd, were 47 in Feb. 2024, so they’re 49 now (assuming they’re still around).

""The keeper in the video said Bugsy threw up to express an interest in mating. Which helps explain this. Sorta.

In happier pelican news, our friend Chris Holmes says the habitat will be getting two new pelicans, Benny and Billy, more nods to Vegas history.

Bugsy’s story is ultimately a mostly uplifting one. His life could’ve ended when he was caught in that fishing net, but he was given a second chance. He spent 14 years in a place where he was safe and cared for, bringing joy to countless visitors during his extended Las Vegas residency.

In time, Nature whacks us all.

What part of “adaptive coping mechanism” wasn’t clear?
