Several residents have also experienced well problems for multiple consecutive years.

Water storage levels also remain below long-term averages in several river basins, including the Androscoggin, Penobscot and Union.

Looking ahead, a strengthening El Niño could influence Maine’s winter weather patterns. The seasonal outlook favors warmer-than-normal temperatures, near- to above-normal precipitation and below-normal snowfall.

Despite the possibility of additional precipitation, officials say groundwater levels are unlikely to recover before the ground freezes, raising concerns that the drought will extend into another year.

Residents are encouraged to conserve water, monitor local conditions and report dry wells through MEMA’s dry-well survey as Maine continues to deal with the impacts of its prolonged drought.

As drought conditions continue across Maine, there are several steps residents can take to protect their water supplies and stay informed.

Residents are encouraged to conserve water by following local water-use restrictions and finding simple ways to reduce unnecessary use. Water-saving tips can help households make the most of their available supply.

Those who rely on private wells should keep an eye on their water levels and report dry wells through the state’s dry well survey.

Public water systems experiencing drought-related problems should notify the Maine CDC’s Drinking Water Program to help officials track impacts on drinking water supplies.

Farmers should monitor water availability and explore drought assistance and other resources offered through state agricultural programs.

Because drought conditions can vary widely across Maine, residents are also encouraged to follow updates from the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), local emergency management agencies, and other state officials.

MEMA has received 156 reports of dry wells in 2026.
