Veronica Burton has helped the Golden State Valkyries navigate a postseason of franchise firsts — from their first playoff victory to their first series win. Now, they turn their attention to the WNBA Finals.

Burton and the Valkyries have spent the postseason redefining expectations for a franchise in just its second season. Despite battling a cold, Burton recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds to help the Valkyries win their first-round series against the Dallas Wings.

In the next round against the reigning WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces, she anchored another defining moment in Game 2. Despite missing every field goal attempt until then, she sank a game-winning 3-pointer that quickly became part of Ballhalla lore.

“My ears have been clogged probably for a week now, so I couldn’t hear it,” Burton said. “I don’t think I understood the magnitude of it. For me, it was just like a sigh of relief because, gosh, I finally did something on this floor. I felt like I was maybe finally helping the team. So for me, it was just a sigh of relief to see the ball go in and obviously help contribute to the win.”

Now, Golden State stands one step away from what once seemed improbable for a young expansion team: winning a WNBA championship.

Burton believes the Valkyries’ historic playoff run proves the power of vision and preparation. In its inaugural 2025 season, Golden State became the first WNBA expansion team to reach the playoffs in its debut season.

“It says a lot about what a vision can do and what a vision can be,” Burton said. “I think when you have specific goals in mind and when you have tactics to reach that goal, like there’s nothing anyone can say or do to stop you. I think the silliest thing that we all do — that we do as humans — is we put limitations on ourselves.”

“So I think when you have other people just saying it’s impossible or saying we don’t have enough, saying we don’t have this, we don’t have a superstar, we don’t have a scorer like whatever it may be,” she continued. “So I think that’s the beautiful thing about what we’re doing is because we’re hooping. …We’re defying the odds, we’re defying the rankings, whatever it may be. It’s not a matter of we don’t care what other people are saying, but I think it’s a lesson that don’t let your own limitations stop you from what’s possible.”

In Episode 5 of her WNBA Diary on Andscape, Burton discusses her game-winning 3-pointer against the Aces, the franchise’s first WNBA Finals appearance, and the challenge of playing the Atlanta Dream, who are also seeking their franchise’s first WNBA championship.
