Behind that total are business owners calculating taxes on their profits, investors paying on capital gains and households settling balances their paycheck withholding did not cover.

The IRS recorded $1.078 trillion nationwide in that category, according to its 2025 state collections table. That money is separate from the table’s combined category for withheld individual income taxes and Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes.

An analysis supplied by J David Tax Law, a tax law firm, places the share of individual returns reporting self-employment tax at roughly 13%, with Florida leading its state comparison and West Virginia at the bottom.

But the study combines statistics from different years and uses electronically filed returns to calculate its payment averages. Its figures describe several aspects of the tax system; they cannot be read as the average self-employment tax bill or as a ranking of households’ overall federal tax burdens.

TrendingJack Smith Hearing Puts Congress’s Role in Trump Investigation Back in Focus
Who sends money directly to the IRS?

Direct individual payments reach well beyond people whose main occupation is working for themselves.

The IRS requires taxes to be paid as income is earned or received. Employers generally handle that through withholding, while taxpayers with business profits or other income outside payroll may need to make estimated payments.

Under the agency’s estimated-tax rules, those obligations can arise from interest, dividends, capital gains and other income, as well as self-employment. Employees and pension recipients can also owe estimated payments when their withholding is insufficient.

Consequently, a state’s direct-payment total can include income taxes paid by investors and retirees alongside income and self-employment taxes paid by independent workers.

A large payment can reflect a substantial investment gain, a profitable business or an outstanding balance at filing. The collections category does not separate those circumstances into a measure of what a typical freelancer pays.

Self-employment tax finances Social Security and Medicare

Self-employment tax is the mechanism through which people working for themselves generally contribute to Social Security and Medicare. Federal income tax is calculated separately.

The standard combined rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. The Social Security portion applies only up to an annually adjusted earnings limit, while Medicare tax continues above that limit. Higher earners can also owe Additional Medicare Tax.

Under IRS self-employment-tax guidance, the tax generally applies when net earnings from self-employment reach $400. Ordinarily, 92.35% of net business profit is subject to the calculation, after ordinary and necessary business expenses.

The obligation can cover independent contractors, sole proprietors and partners. It can also arise from a side business operated by someone who receives a regular paycheck.

A return reporting self-employment tax therefore does not necessarily represent a person working independently full time. A joint return can also cover two spouses with different sources of earnings. The share of returns reporting the tax is a tax-filing measure, rather than the percentage of Americans who are self-employed.

Florida’s participation lead comes from 2023 returns

The law firm’s comparison reports that 16.16% of Florida returns included self-employment tax, followed by Tennessee at 15.53% and Texas at 15.51%. West Virginia’s reported share was 9.36%.

Those percentages come from tax year 2023, rather than fiscal 2025. The underlying IRS state income-tax statistics report 21,811,720 returns nationwide with self-employment tax for 2023, including 1,812,810 in Florida and 72,780 in West Virginia.

The difference between Florida’s and West Virginia’s reported participation rates is 6.80 percentage points. Florida’s rate was approximately 1.73 times West Virginia’s.

These figures count returns reporting the tax. They do not track how much of each household’s income came from independent work, how many hours people worked or whether business ownership was their principal livelihood.

The payment averages use electronic filings

The study reports direct payments of $10,746 per return in Florida, $13,157 in Wyoming and $2,829 in West Virginia.

Its denominator, however, comes from IRS Data Book Table 1-4, which counts electronically filed returns. Paper returns are excluded.

Florida’s listed 10,857,635 returns are electronic individual filings. The broader Table 1-3 records 11,635,282 individual income tax returns for the state in fiscal 2025.

Dividing Florida’s $116.680 billion in collections by that broader filing count produces approximately $10,028 per return, compared with the study’s $10,746. Using all individual filings similarly produces approximately $12,476 for Wyoming and $2,667 for West Virginia.

Even those revised calculations are aggregate ratios. Collections received during a fiscal year can relate to different tax periods, while returns filed during that year are a separate administrative count. Fiscal 2025 ran from Oct. 1, 2024, through Sept. 30, 2025.

The study’s stated 151,215,914 returns should therefore not be described as every individual return filed nationwide. The IRS reports 162,754,810 individual income tax returns overall for fiscal 2025.

Two rankings require different labels

The supplied state lists also follow self-employment-tax participation rather than payment amounts.

Tennessee appears second in the upper list with payments of $4,779 per electronic return, although Connecticut, farther down that list, records $11,937. In the lower list, Nevada’s $8,919 exceeds several figures in the upper group.

The lists can be presented as comparisons of the share of returns reporting self-employment tax. Their ordering cannot support the accompanying descriptions of the highest and lowest direct payments.

Nor does a higher payment average necessarily mean residents face higher effective tax rates. Establishing that would require information about income, deductions, credits, withholding and final liabilities. The study supplies no analysis isolating the causes of the state differences.

Payment timing adds another obligation

For independent workers, federal tax administration includes estimating liabilities during the year, alongside reporting annual income.

Individuals generally must make estimated payments if they expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits, subject to applicable exceptions. The IRS divides the year into four payment periods.

A taxpayer can face an underpayment penalty for paying too little or paying late during those periods, even when the completed annual return ultimately produces a refund.

People who also earn wages can cover additional obligations by increasing paycheck withholding. That option further complicates comparisons between self-employment-tax participation and direct remittances: some households can report self-employment tax while meeting their payment obligations through an employer.

The annual reconciliation comes when the return is filed. Estimated payments and withholding are credited against the calculated liability, leaving either a balance to pay or an overpayment eligible for a refund.

Americans paid more than $1 trillion directly to the Internal Revenue Service in fiscal 2025 through a collection…

[38
28,134
post-886762","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-jobs","tag-business","tag-jobs
["GET
