CBS<\/a>\u2019s chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford has apologized for and deleted a social media post praising a man who questioned Democratic Michigan US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed about the Muslim Brotherhood during a town hall on Saturday.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Crawford, who initially joined CBS in 2009, wrote<\/a> on X: \u201cEarlier, I tweeted a video from an Abdul El-Sayed town hall. I deleted that tweet because it was a violation of CBS News standards. I apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crawford\u2019s deleted post had thanked a man named Tommy while also saying: \u201cI had to watch this twice to catch Dr Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s nanosecond, \u2018yeah, absolutely,\u2019 response. His subsequent uninterrupted three-minute diatribe proving your exact point is the kind of spectacular self own most [people] only dream about triggering. Congrats.\u201d<\/p>\n

The video to which Crawford referred showed the man who identified himself only as Tommy asking El-Sayed: \u201cWill you disavow the Muslim Brotherhood?\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, El-Sayed<\/a> said: \u201cSure. Yeah, absolutely. Why are you asking the question?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tommy replied: \u201cWell, because they\u2019re a terrorist group.\u201d El-Sayed then rejoined, \u201cBut what are you implying? Do you assume that I wouldn\u2019t?<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re asking the question because implicitly you assume that I\u2019ll have dual loyalties, right? You assume that somehow I wouldn\u2019t disavow, or that I\u2019ll have some higher order allegiance than the constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crawford\u2019s tweet evidently generated substantial backlash from within CBS<\/a> and among other members of the news media.<\/p>\n

The Guardian\u2019s media reporter Jeremy Barr wrote<\/a> on X on Sunday: \u201cI\u2019m told there was a lot of internal backlash at CBS News to the Jan Crawford tweet \u2013 which may be why she deleted it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, journalist AJ Katz wrote:<\/a> \u201cJan Crawford is CBS News\u2019 chief legal correspondent, not an opinion commentator. Pretty striking language from a broadcast network news journalist about a Democratic senate candidate on her public account.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pod Save America co-host Tommy Vietor said<\/a> in part: \u201cVery strange editorializing from a chief legal correspondent!\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, CNN political commentator Karen Finney wrote<\/a> that Crawford had been \u201ccaught red handed\u201d trying to help \u201cspread false, racist lies about Abdul because he is Muslim\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShame on you,\u201d Finney also wrote.<\/p>\n

Crawford\u2019s apology and post deletion comes as CBS has faced intense scrutiny over allegations of political bias after conservative commentator Bari Weiss was appointed as the network\u2019s editor-in-chief in October 2025.<\/p>\n

Weiss\u2019s appointment came after CBS\u2019s corporate parent, Paramount Skydance, acquired Weiss\u2019s right-leaning digital media company, The Free Press.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, on Tuesday after recently joining CBS News as its global affairs correspondent, veteran British broadcaster Sir Trevor Phillips delivered a blunt message during a tense meeting with the network\u2019s London bureau staff, telling <\/a>critics questioning the outlet\u2019s integrity to \u201cfuck off and let us do our jobs\u201d.<\/p>\n

MS Now host Ali Velshi interviewed<\/a> El-Sayed on Saturday and asked him about getting Muslim Brotherhood-related questions while running against Mike Rogers, a Republican, for a Senate seat in the 3 November midterms<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole reason this question is being asked is to insinuate that somehow I have dual loyalties,\u201d said El-Sayed<\/a>, whose party is predicted to gain seats during the midterms.
