For the second time in less than a month, a nor’easter is poised to batter Atlantic beaches from North Carolina’s Outer Banks to coastal New Jersey this week. But unlike September’s storm<\/a>, this one will probably remain far enough offshore to spare areas farther inland from significant rain and wind.<\/p>\n

The DC area will likely remain mostly sunny, even as the storm churns up waves exceeding 20 feet over the open ocean.<\/p>\n

The storm’s main impacts \u2014 beach erosion and coastal flooding \u2014 should be concentrated along the Mid-Atlantic coast. But this will be a prolonged event, with multiple rounds of flooding possible around high tide.<\/p>\n

“High water may make driving unsafe or impossible,” the Town of Bethany Beach warned in a statement<\/a>. “There is a heightened risk of wave over-wash and dune breaching during peak high tides.”<\/p>\n

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring the storm<\/a>, as it may obtain some tropical characteristics as it meanders over the warm waters over the Gulf Stream. It gives it a 40 percent chance of becoming a subtropical storm.<\/p>\n

Gathering strength a few hunded miles east of the Outer Banks on Monday, the storm will slowly drift northward, making its closest approach to the Maryland and Delaware beaches late Wednesday. It will then parallel the New Jersey coast Thursday before moving farther out to sea east of New England on Friday.<\/p>\n

Even along the beaches, uncertainty remains about how much wind and rain will reach shore, as the latest model projections keep the storm’s center well offshore. There is greater confidence, however, that the storm will cause days of at least minor to moderate coastal flooding and beach erosion.<\/p>\n

Coastal flooding, already affecting North Carolina’s Outer Banks and Virginia’s Tidewater region Monday, is forecast to spread northward to the Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey beaches Tuesday and persist into Wednesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n

Alerts for coastal flooding line the coast and water levels could rise 1 to 3 feet above normal around high tide over multiple days, inundating low-lying roads in coastal and bayside communities.<\/p>\n

High surf advisories<\/a> are in effect for large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet. Dangerous rip currents are also expected.<\/p>\n

Water levels should begin to recede Thursday and Friday, progressing from south to north.<\/p>\n

The ongoing El Ni\u00f1o climate pattern can favor coastal storm development, particularly as fall gives way to winter. This second nor’easter threatens to inflict additional damage on an already battered shoreline, potentially driving up beach replenishment costs.
