Contributed\/Warner Bros.\u00a0Television Group Publicity<\/a><\/p>\n Dayton native Amanda Mikkel is moving on to the next stage of NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Voice\u201d after winning her battle-round matchup Monday night.<\/p>\n The 31-year-old singer faced Julia Clark of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, in a duet of the Elvis Presley classic \u201cCan\u2019t Help Falling in Love,\u201d a song selected by their coach, Adam Levine.<\/p>\n \u201cThe most important thing about a pairing is to always make it feel compatible,\u201d Levine said. \u201cLike, these two people can sing together, and it\u2019s gonna be a vibe and it\u2019s gonna be good.\u201d<\/p>\n Grammy-nominated artist Alex Warren, known for the chart-topping hit \u201cOrdinary,\u201d joined Levine during rehearsals as a mentor and praised Mikkel\u2019s ability to connect emotionally with a song.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I listen to Amanda\u2019s voice, it tells a story,\u201d Warren said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much soul. You can tell she\u2019s a vocalist.\u201d<\/p>\n Mikkel said she was thrilled to receive guidance from Warren, whose recent success has inspired her own musical journey.<\/p>\n \u201cSeeing Alex was crazy because he\u2019s a new artist and doing all the amazing things right now, nominated for Best New Artist,\u201d Mikkel said. \u201cWe\u2019re literally trying to follow the same path as him.\u201d<\/p>\n A 4-chair turn! Dayton native Amanda Mikkel impresses judges on \u2018The Voice\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n The 2013 graduate of Stivers School for the Arts also reflected on the personal significance of the song, speaking about the influence of her late mother.<\/p>\n \u201cFor me, the song represents an in-and-out-of-love journey I\u2019ve had with music over time,\u201d Mikkel said. \u201cMy mom passed away when I was 9. She loved music and was always singing. I feel like music kind of took the place of the grief I didn\u2019t know how to express.\u201d<\/p>\n She added that appearing on the show has reaffirmed her commitment to pursuing music professionally.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought so many times about whether I was making the right decisions, choosing music as my path,\u201d Mikkel said. \u201cSo just being able to be here and be present and focus on my gift, focus on my artistry, has been really incredible. Everything I\u2019m working and hustling for is paying off.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Following the performance, the celebrity coaches offered their critiques, including praise for Mikkel\u2019s blind audition performance of \u201cMoon River,\u201d which aired Sept. 23<\/p>\n \u201cAmanda, you\u2019ve been singing challenging and unusual songs from day one,\u201d Queen Latifah said. “The beauty you put on \u2018Moon River\u2019 was just unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAmanda, I loved what you did in \u2018Moon River,\u2019 and then you crushed this one, too,\u201d Riley Green said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing you can\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n Kelly Clarkson also gave Mikkel the edge in the matchup.<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019re both rad vocalists,\u201d Clarkson said. \u201cI do think Amanda might fare a little better in the competition setting.\u201d<\/p>\n Levine ultimately selected Mikkel to advance, acknowledging that both performers appeared nervous but praising Mikkel\u2019s vocal quality and potential.<\/p>\n \u201cThe quality of Amanda\u2019s voice is really stunning and beautiful and pure and ethereal,\u201d Levine said. \u201cAmanda has a lot of potential. She\u2019s gonna have to show it all to us, though, during Cut Week.\u201d<\/p>\n Mikkel said she is determined to prove herself in the next round.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m extremely proud,\u201d she said. \u201cI know that (Adam) said there were nerves that I have to work on. I hope to show him everything I\u2019m capable of during Cut Week.
