From my couch, I can also order dinner, buy a dress for an upcoming wedding and stream a movie. (Jeeves, bring me my groceries.)

But it comes with a cost. When I use Instacart to buy groceries, I pay a service fee, a shopper tip and a markup on items at the store I usually order from. As the person in the family who bought groceries, he felt he could still contribute by doing the shopping online. “I could make my wife’s life easier,” he says.

Review a few months’ worth of transactions and add up fees and tips, plus check your subscriptions. If the number surprises you, make one change to bring it down, like shopping more in person or cooking more at home.

“Convenience has real value,” Bardastani said, “but consumers should still be thoughtful about which services are delivering value for them.”

Addas a preferred source on Google

About the author

Kate Ashford is a writer and spokesperson for NerdWallet.
