BioWare <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bioware\/status\/2112953618093535510\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced via social media<\/a> Wednesday afternoon that \u201cafter more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The official announcement was posted mere minutes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-10-21\/electronic-arts-to-cut-400-jobs-shut-down-bioware\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Bloomberg report<\/a> detailed 400 job cuts across BioWare parent company Electronic Arts, including 50 at BioWare, based on reports from \u201ca person familiar with the company\u2019s plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross our portfolio, we\u2019re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth,\u201d EA executives wrote in a message to staff, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>A long time coming<\/p>\n<p>Following its 1995 founding in Edmonton, Alberta, BioWare first came under the EA umbrella through <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2007\/10\/ea-acquires-bioware-pandemic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 2007 purchase<\/a>, before Mass Effect and Dragon Age were even a thing. At the time, EA\u2019s then-CEO, John Riccitiello, called BioWare one of \u201cthe most respected studios in the industry\u201d that would \u201cmake a strong contribution to our strategic growth initiatives on quality, online gaming and developing new intellectual properties. We also expect this will drive long-term value for our shareholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, EA doesn\u2019t have public stockholders anymore after <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2025\/09\/its-official-ea-is-selling-to-private-equity-in-55-billion-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a $55 billion deal<\/a> led by Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund, and Jared Kushner\u2019s Affinity Partners took the company private last year.
