The El Ni\u00f1o weather pattern could cause a record rise in ocean temperatures in the Pacific as it barrels \u200caround the globe like a “wrecking ball” causing floods and droughts, UN officials said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The WMO and the UN \u2060under-secretary-general \u2060for humanitarian affairs and emergency \u200brelief coordinator, Tom Fletcher, called for urgent action to get ready.<\/p>\n

“This El Ni\u00f1o \u200bis the behemoth, it \u2060is a wrecking ball. It will tear through Latin America, Eastern and Southern Africa, Asia and the Pacific with extreme heat, droughts and flood,” Fletcher said, warning of massive humanitarian consequences.<\/p>\n

Some 50 million people could face increased hunger, he \u2060said.<\/p>\n
