And it’s totally different today. After a couple of storms,” said Bill Dougherty of Sea Isle City.

Several shore communities have been recovering for weeks after a September nor’easter caused significant beach and dune damage in multiple towns.

“If you get a few of those in succession, that can be a problem. We have a long way to go to get to May,” said George Savastano, business administrator for Sea Isle City.

In Sea Isle City, officials said some areas are seeing sand return naturally. The city recently completed a beach replenishment project, and officials are considering whether sand may need to be moved around the island in the spring to prepare for next summer’s tourism season.

Officials remain concerned about the potential for additional severe storms during the winter months. As we know that’s one of our most vulnerable and valuable assets that we have here in Atlantic City,” said Scott Evans, Atlantic City’s director of emergency management.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the September storm had the fifth-highest erosion potential of any weather event in Atlantic City during the past 115 years.

As the current coastal storm continues to affect the shoreline, Atlantic City officials are working with other agencies to explore solutions aimed at preventing additional damage.

“Grant writers, our administrators, our public works people have been meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers to see what we can come up with some temporary solutions to prevent further damage to the boardwalk and some of the structures on the other side,” Evans said.

Minor tidal flooding is expected through Thursday, and officials said strong winds could also create hazards.
