After coming up empty-handed this summer thanks to the Anaheim Ducks deciding to match the Leo Carlsson offer sheet, general manager Danny Briere is back to working the phones and looking for whoever is available that they could get and be a top-of-the-lineup player. Which has led them to Simon Edvinsson.

The Detroit Red Wings defenseman has been disgruntled by his team’s lack of urgency to sign him as a restricted free agent this summer and is still without a contract almost a month into the season. That has caused him to make it clear that he prefers a trade out of Detroit. Unfortunately for him, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff has already publicly stated that he is not entertaining trade offers for the 23-year-old defender.

Well, that’s changing a little bit as the stalemate continues. The Red Wings might be starting to prefer to move on from the player and not let someone who seems to have soured on the organization, welcomed back onto the team with open arms — they already have someone on the roster and in the lineup that doesn’t want to be there.

Flyers one of the teams pursuing Simon Edvinsson heavily

On the latest episode of DFO Insider, David Pagnotta dove deep into what’s going on with Simon Edvinsson and specifically which teams are getting involved in trade discussions surrounding the young defenseman.

“What I was told yesterday was as much as Shawn Horcoff does not want to trade him, he has been engaged in trade talks that have escalated in the last little bit involving Simon Edvinsson. Philadelphia, Boston, St. Louis, Seattle, I think Nashville is among them that are in this mix. Toronto poked around but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I believe Calgary did too, I don’t know if that’s that, but there are others. There are a lot of others but those are the teams that I think have been pretty engaged in this,” Pagnotta said Wednesday.

Edvinsson is in North America after heading back to Sweden after coming to Red Wings training camp without a contract as a sign of good will. The young defenseman is training in Boston currently.

Pagnotta continued to add that in a discussion with someone who is with a team who has inquired about Edvinsson but doesn’t believe they have enough to get him, told him that they think this saga ends in a trade. Despite Horcoff saying the opposite, with every day that passes and there isn’t a contract with a certain signature on it, the likelihood of a trade increases.

To play at all in the 2026-27 NHL season, Edvinsson has to sign a contract by December 1, so that is the ultimate deadline but it would be a little ridiculous for this to stretch out for over five more weeks.

It certainly makes sense that the Flyers are one of these teams trying to pry a very young blueliner who feels like he’s on the cusp of establishing himself as a top-pairing defenseman for the next decade, if not a No. 1 defender. But you can clearly see that there is a whole lot of competition.

Earlier in the week, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that as many as 10 teams have been engaged in trade discussions with the Red Wings about Edvinsson, with the San Jose Sharks and the Boston Bruins being the two teams who were specifically named who are in pursuit. It’s safe to assume that the Flyers are one of those 10 teams in LeBrun’s report after Pagnotta has repeatedly been naming them, and often as one of the first teams mentioned.

The 23-year-old Swedish blueliner scored nine goals and 25 points in 72 games last season, plateauing a little bit from his 31-point campaign in the previous year. But it’s all about the potential of what a 6-foot-6 giant on your blue line that can skate exceptionally well, can do to the makeup of your team and make an impact larger than he ever has in Detroit.

What would it take to land Edvinsson?

It’s hard to imagine that it wouldn’t be a substantial trade package heading to the Red Wings — one that would pose some ultimate risk of blowing up in the Flyers’ face.

In LeBrun’s report from this week, he also mentioned some historic comparables. Specifically, there are four trades that were brought up that could be frameworks for the Edvinsson deal: Noah Dobson to Montreal, Mikhail Sergachev to Utah, Bowen Byram to Chicago, and Simon Nemec to Calgary.

Those deals vary in value given up. From Nemec being gone for two conditional first-round picks and a second-rounder, to the Blackhawks giving up the fourth-overall selection for Byram. Even the other two deals were heavy prices. The Utah Mammoth handed over top-line defender JJ Moser and top prospect Conor Geekie for Sergachev, and Dobson got to the Canadiens via the 16th- and 17th-overall picks, as well as young forward Emil Heineman.

For the Flyers, it would certainly include someone on the current NHL roster that holds significant value like Owen Tippett, or even just someone who could be seen as an easy replacement for Detroit like Cam York. And then add a couple high-end picks like the Maple Leafs’ first-round pick next year or their own 2028 first-round pick, and a prospect like Jack Nesbitt or Jett Luchanko, and that could be a starting point. It could also cost a whole lot more than that because, unlike the examples given, the Red Wings don’t really want to move the player and it’s the player himself pushing for the deal to be made.

Trade comparisons are never easy, but it would no doubt be a massive package heading to Detroit for Edvinsson. And we’re sure now the Flyers front office is going back and forth debating whether or not a player who has played his best minutes next to future Norris Trophy winner Moritz Seider, and hasn’t scored over 31 points in a season yet, is worth that much.

The Philadelphia Flyers are on the hunt for an impact player.
