The letters mean something, but the explanation is more useful when there’s a shot to hit.

For Bob Vokey, the M started with watching tour players and listening to what they wanted.

In the late 1990s, players typically brought him wedges with full soles and requested modifications. Remove some metal from the heel. Take a little off the trailing edge. Trim the toe.

Vokey combined those requests into a crescent-shaped sole that became the M Grind, his longtime favorite and an ancestor of several options in today’s lineup.

Now, Titleist is giving that original design a limited-edition encore.

The Vokey Signature 60M arrives Oct. 22, priced at $399 and limited to 1,000 worldwide. Offered with 60 degrees of loft and a Slate Blue finish, it recreates the original M Grind’s profile, sole dimensions and shaping while incorporating modern SM11 technology.

A Project X wedge shaft and Golf Pride BCT Cord grip are standard. Vokey’s signed initials appear on the grip, with a BV Signature Series shaft band and a bag tag identifying the club as part of the limited release.

That’s the collectible portion of the program. The useful part is underneath.

The M Grind’s heel, toe and trailing edge relief gives golfers room to manipulate the face around the greens while retaining bounce for shots played with the face square.

“I think M Grind is Bob’s best work,” said Vokey tour representative Aaron Dill. “It gives you the best of both worlds. It has the bounce you need to hit square-face shots and a shape that allows you to open up the face around the green.”

That basic shape also provided a foundation for other grinds. The D adds forward bounce to reduce digging. The T removes material to create a narrower, lower-bounce sole that helps the leading edge sit lower.

If you already play an SM11 M Grind, this announcement supplies little reason to expect a short-game transformation. The appeal is owning a recreation of the design that helped establish Vokey’s approach to wedge versatility, dressed for the occasion.

For golfers who appreciate that history, $399 buys something with a connection to the workshop. Whether it earns a place in the bag or stays on display will probably depend on how comfortable its owner feels introducing a collectible to a bunker.

David Dusek is a senior writer at Golfweek Magazine and writes primarily about golf equipment, technology, and PGA Tour analytics.

This article originally appeared on Golfweek: Vokey Signature 60M brings back the grind that started it all

Reporting by David Dusek, Golfweek / Golfweek

USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Golfers who can describe the difference between Vokey’s M, D and T grinds sometimes sound like car enthusiasts…

[71
427,99
post-891086","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-golf","tag-golf","tag-sports
["GET
