{"id":891718,"date":"2026-10-23T07:40:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T07:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/891718\/"},"modified":"2026-10-23T07:40:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T07:40:11","slug":"nippon-steel-to-invest-3-billion-in-new-u-s-steel-hot-strip-mill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/891718\/","title":{"rendered":"Nippon Steel to invest $3 billion in new U.S. Steel hot-strip mill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York \u2013 United States Steel, which was acquired by Japan\u2019s Nippon Steel, said Thursday that it plans to invest about $3 billion to build a hot-strip mill at its Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>The project is expected to be the largest under Nippon Steel\u2019s commitment \u2014 made as part of its acquisition of U.S. Steel \u2014 to invest $11 billion by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>A hot-strip mill rolls steel slabs heated to high temperatures into thin sheets.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Steel aims to begin production at the mill in the second half of 2029. The site will allow for expanding output of automotive steel sheets, one of the areas in which Nippon Steel excels, and other products to bolster the U.S. company\u2019s competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Nippon Steel had initially planned to invest up to $2.5 billion in Mon Valley Works over three years. The projected cost has risen to reflect higher labor costs and inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Nippon Steel completed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/business\/2025\/06\/19\/companies\/nippon-steel-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquisition of U.S. Steel<\/a> in June 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese steelmaker\u2019s domestic operations have struggled with weak market conditions caused by excess production in China and rising costs stemming from tensions in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Against this backdrop, U.S. Steel contributed to Nippon Steel\u2019s return to the black in the April-June quarter of 2026, emerging as what the Japanese company called its biggest earnings driver.
