Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is one of four city golf courses in St. George, Utah.\u00a0 \u00a0An enjoyable, affordable 9-hole track.\u00a0 Greens have tons of character.\u00a0 The kind of course every town should have.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/p>\n

St. George, Utah is one of the fastest-growing golf destinations in the United States, and it\u2019s easy to see why.\u00a0 Getting there is straightforward \u2013 an easy two hour drive from Las Vegas \u2013 the weather is fantastic, and the natural beauty is jaw dropping.\u00a0 What\u2019s more, much of the golf is affordable.\u00a0 The city of St. George maintains four municipal courses, and the subject of this review, Dixie Red Hills Golf Course, packs in more great views and fun shots per dollar than any course I\u2019ve played.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie
\nPractice Facilities<\/p>\n

Walking out of the clubhouse at\u00a0Dixie Red Hills Golf Course, you\u2019ll find the first of two putting greens.\u00a0 The one nearer the clubhouse is medium in size, comfortable for no more than four golfers.\u00a0 A larger putting green is situated a level below the first tee.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a driving range with about eight hitting mats and grass to hit from.\u00a0 The range is limited \u2013 shots past 235 yards are prohibited \u2013 and there are no nets.\u00a0 It\u2019s situated among the triangle of closing holes, so you need to be careful about your shots leaving the range\u2026and shots from the course entering the range.<\/p>\n

Customer Service & Amenities<\/p>\n

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course has a medium-sized clubhouse that covers all the essentials.\u00a0 There\u2019s a surprisingly large amount of logo gear, a wide array of golf balls, and a handful of clubs.\u00a0 The vibe is casual and loose \u2013 golfers are called to the first tee via a loudspeaker.<\/p>\n

This is a fairly short course, and, as such, the majority of golfers walk.\u00a0 In fact, depending on the time of year, there are no riding carts at all.\u00a0 Rental push carts were in high demand, so the traveling golfer should bring a bag they don\u2019t mind carrying.<\/p>\n

As a tourist, my favorite \u201camenities\u201d were the local golfers we met.\u00a0 We played with Mat and Jason who offered great dining recommendations and commentary on the area courses.\u00a0 If you want to really know a place, you need to talk to the locals, and the locals play here.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

Visiting the Greater Zion Area \u2013 Activities<\/p>\n

The golf in Greater Zion is outstanding, but if you skip all the other things to do in this area, you\u2019re missing out.\u00a0 That starts with the Zion National Park, one of my personal top two.\u00a0 The park is just thirty minutes from St. George, and it\u2019s one of the most approachable national parks I\u2019ve visited.\u00a0 From the Springdale entrance a shuttle takes you to numerous trail heads, so you can enjoy a short walk or a full day excursion.\u00a0 I\u2019d also strongly recommend renting an e-bike and riding through the park.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

This area\u2019s parks go far beyond the namesake.\u00a0 We visited the Petrified Dunes at Snow Canyon State Park, located within minutes of The Ledges.\u00a0 Other state parks include Sand Hollow, Quail Creek, and Gunlock, and they offer activities ranging from boating, kayaking, camping, ATVing, and, of course, hiking.<\/p>\n

If you want to pair your golf with more restful activities, you can start by planning some stargazing.\u00a0 Zion is a certified Dark Sky Park.\u00a0 If you\u2019re from an urban area, you\u2019re going to see things in the night sky that you\u2019ve never imagined.\u00a0 There are also festivals, theaters, and much more.\u00a0 Check out the Greater Zion website HERE<\/a> for a comprehensive listing.<\/p>\n

Beauty & Scenery<\/p>\n

I have never seen a course that gets close to Dixie Red Hills Golf Course on the \u201cDollars to Views\u201d ratio.\u00a0 For $27, you get nine holes of red rock mountain views.\u00a0 The contrast between the rocks and the lush greens of the course is spectacular.<\/p>\n

What really impressed me about the beauty of this course is the feeling of isolation.\u00a0 It\u2019s located right off a fairly major road, but with the exception of hole #8, you never see it.\u00a0 In fact, you barely see houses or anything other than golf course and nature.\u00a0 I give St. George a standing ovation for keeping a course this beautiful this affordable.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie
\nTee Shots<\/p>\n

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is not a bombers playground.\u00a0 At par 34, it measures 2,733 yards from the back tees and 2,127 from the front tees.\u00a0 There\u2019s just one par 5, and the longest par 4 is 389 yards.\u00a0 Two of the par 4s are barely over 300 yards from the back tees.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

That lack of length doesn\u2019t mean this is an easy course to dominate off the tee.\u00a0 The fairways are all below average in width, and there\u2019s only one hole that\u2019s straight.\u00a0 You\u2019ll find plenty of trouble if you hit it sideways, and the doglegs range from gentle bends to full 90 degree turns.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, this is not a course where you can mindlessly lay up off every tee.\u00a0 The 9th hole, for example, requires an accurate shot in the range of 200 yards just to get a clean look at the green.\u00a0 Dixie Red Hills Golf Course does offer a couple chances to make full driver swings, but it\u2019s really built to favor the accurate, thinking golfer.<\/p>\n

Approach Shots<\/p>\n

If you achieved your goal off the tee, your shot into the green will be straightforward.\u00a0 There is some movement in the fairways at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course, but nothing that will stop you from flag hunting.\u00a0 Similarly, some shots play slightly uphill, but it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll need a whole extra club to compensate.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

Things get more interesting if your tee shot gets wayward.\u00a0 The rough is moderate \u2013 more thick than tall \u2013 but it can cause issues if you get unlucky.\u00a0 If you get further off course, you\u2019ll be hitting from rocky desert lies, assuming you can find the ball.<\/p>\n

The biggest obstacles are the trees.\u00a0 The tree lines are light, allowing you windows to play through.\u00a0 If you have strong control of your shot shape and trajectory, you can turn poor tee shots into GIRs.\u00a0 Of course, taking on risky approach shots can also turn bogeys into triples.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

Greens & Surrounds<\/p>\n

The greens are the star of the show at\u00a0Dixie Red Hills Golf Course.\u00a0 Starting with speed and condition, they\u2019re far better than anyone should expect from a $27 course.\u00a0 They\u2019re fast enough that the undulations matter, but not so fast that their target customer won\u2019t be able to roll a few in.\u00a0 Similarly, they\u2019re receptive to approach shots and pitches without being mushy, pockmarked dartboards.<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

With the exception of a couple tiered greens, you won\u2019t find exaggerated undulations here, but every green at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course has character.\u00a0 Subtle shoulders, false fronts, and ridges ask you to carefully evaluate every putt.\u00a0 Your scoring is likely to be dictated in some measure by the pin positions: there are some really nasty spots on some of these greens.<\/p>\n

If you miss the green, Dixie Red Hills Golf Course gives you ample opportunity to get up and down.\u00a0 The surrounds are a mix of a short collar cut and the same medium-thick rough seen in the fairways.\u00a0 No matter your preferred short game style, you can have success here.\u00a0 Finally, the bunkers are almost uniformly shallow, requiring just a touch of elevation to escape.<\/p>\n

Overall Design<\/p>\n

The best single word for Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is one I\u2019ve taken from my dad: sporty.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a big, bruising course, nor is it overdone or tricked out.\u00a0 But it\u2019s not boring or easy, either.<\/p>\n

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is exactly the kind of course I\u2019d like to play as my regular track: you have chances to hit every club in your bag and when you find some trouble (which you will), you\u2019ll have a chance to play a fun recovery.\u00a0 And when you reconvene with your group on the green, everyone will have a reasonable chance to make a putt and walk away feeling good.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll end where I started: every town should have a Dixie Red Hills Golf Course.\u00a0 While the natural beauty makes it something truly special, this course would get my strongest approval without it.\u00a0 This is a fun track that players of all ages can enjoy, and golfers of all budgets can afford.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a local, I\u2019m jealous.\u00a0 If you\u2019re traveling here, make this part of your itinerary.<\/p>\n
