Look at the numbers and it wouldn’t be all that hard to see why. The Kings ranked in the league’s bottom-five in shot attempts, shots on goal and scoring chances in 3-on-3 on a per/60 basis. They almost always had puck possession. Lots of that. But, as the numbers show, possession was not converted into offensive opportunities.

As the season flipped to 2026-27, the Kings lost their first two overtime games of the season. Small sample size, but the Kings this time around rank in the top-five in shots on goal at 3-on-3, per/60. But the results hadn’t changed. You’d start to wonder if there was some déjà vu. Even though I think the Kings began to play differently, seeing some of the concepts they worked on throughout training camp, they didn’t get the goals and therefore, they didn’t get the wins.

Peter Laviolette, after both defeats, liked the looks his team got in overtime, despite the losses. But again, no wins. I think it’s fair to say we saw more 3-on-3 practice during training camp than I’ve seen in my time covering the team. When speaking with Associate Coach Phil Housley over the summer, he was quite candid about the video work he was putting into improving in those areas, already with concepts in mind on what he wanted to integrate.

Last night, I thought we started to see those concepts in motion. Yes, it was still a possession-based system. That’s what overtime is in the NHL often times. The Kings turned over a line change and in doing so, they got tired players on the other side of ice. But it wasn’t possession for possession’s sake. Halfway into overtime, Adrian Kempe collected Brandt Clarke’s deflected pass on a 2-on-1 and deked out New York goaltender Semyon Varlamov……but couldn’t lift the puck high enough from a sharp angle to get over the pad.

What happened next was encouraging. Forward Erik Haula collected Kempe’s rebound and went all the way back to Darcy Kuemper, to retain possession and clear the zone. Kuemper, instead of slowing everything down, fed Clarke with a quick hitter. One pass later, the Kings were back in the zone, just nine seconds after Kempe was denied, now against skaters who were even more tired.

Instead of starting another cycle, Kempe went direct and he knew exactly where Clarke would be. As Clarke said post-game, the exchange they made was a concept being encouraged, with more crisscrossing and switching on the ice. As Kempe cut in, Clarke overlapped and got into a good position. One bar-down shot later and the Kings made it two straight.

Honestly, sometimes last season, it felt like the Kings might not get a Grade-A in overtime. Even if they did get a 2-on-1 or something, it just felt like they’d find a way to make it less dangerous. Or, maybe the Kempe deke and denial might’ve been the only chance we saw last year. But to see the urgency in not just resetting quickly, but getting quickly back on the attack, was really good to see. It led to an even better chance and the two points.

BRANDT FREAKING CLARKE https://t.co/Q6IHpfNL9W

— LA Kings (@LAKings) October 23, 2026

Last night’s game was a weird one for me overall.

You don’t get much for playing really well but losing. So, on a night when the Kings felt like they were chasing the game for the better part of 40 minutes, but they did get two points, they get their plaudits because we’ll be quick to note when it’s the other way.

The Kings got two goals from Artemi Panarin in the first period, but it felt like they were chasing the game almost the entire time. Felt like a carbon copy in the second period, as the Islanders scored just once and the Kings continued to lead. At 5-on-5, in the first 40 minutes, the Islanders had more than double the shot attempts and exactly double the scoring chances, per Natural Stat Trick. But the Kings led 2-1. Los Angeles made some tweaks in the third period, including a shuffling of the defensive pairs. Seemed to work, as shot attempts read 25-13 Kings and scoring chances read 15-6 Kings. And yet, the Islanders scored the only goal of the period. Go figure.

Just one of those weird games. The Kings played one good period and lost it 1-0. They didn’t play well at all for two periods and won that segment 2-1. I’ll describe the latter as simply the Artemi Panarin effect.

Panarin is the cheat code. No matter how things are going for the team, Panarin is just a threat to get on the board every night. Last year, and really many years, it’s always felt like the Kings had to work so hard just to get one goal. Every goal felt earned and worked for. Rarely was it effortless, right? It just looks effortless sometimes with Panarin. He makes audacious passes most players in the league couldn’t comprehend. And he completes them with ease. The way he looked off Varlamov on his goal shows just how respected of a playmaker he is. Varlamov is a veteran goaltender and knows what Panarin can do. He can also make you pay for cheating, even if it’s out of respect. He nearly finished the hat trick too but couldn’t get a first-period breakaway to go. He was the difference maker the Kings acquired him to be.

He just makes it look easy. It’s rarely looked easy for the Kings. As such, it just becomes so much more doable to overcome stretches of control like the Islanders had.

The other reason the game was 2-1 at that point was the play of Darcy Kuemper. If you want to know just how many critical saves Kuemper made, here’s a stat to drive the point home.

Since re-joining the Kings at the start of the 2024-25 season, Kuemper’s highest number of high-danger saves at 5-on-5 in a single game was 10. He tied that mark last night, with a perfect 10-of-10. He’s never had a perfect 10-for-10 in that span, allowing at least one goal on each other occasion he’s been peppered to that extent. Even in giving up eight goals in Colorado, he had just five high-danger chances against that resulted in shots on goal. That was double tonight. Man was Kuemper good.

He started the season with a snowman against the Avalanche. Despite it, he’s up to nearly four goals saved above average this season at 5-on-5 for the season. He’s right around even overall, at all strengths, and that’s tough to do after giving up four power-play goals and eight total goals in the opener. Kuemper was that good last night. Credit to him. He looked off down the stretch last season, no dancing around that. He’s come back and looks like himself again. Props.

So, the Kings are off to a 2-0-0 start on the trip. As they reach the hump day game, they’ll have the chance to secure a winning trip with two games remaining. That settles the ship after a six-game winless start. Panarin has five points on the trip. Kempe has two goals while Alex Laferriere has three points. Clarke has multiple points. The top-end players have almost exclusively carried the load and it feels like they need to in order to have a chance. The depth scoring has been non-existent and the two wins are almost exclusively down to the top-end production + goaltending, the guys you want to see doing well.

The Devils and Rangers are both off to good starts to the season. As were the Capitals and Islanders, though, with all four teams in the Eastern Conference’s Top-8 currently by points percentage. Two wins down. See if they can do it on a matinee in Newark.

Scheduled day off today for the team and no morning skate on Saturday, so flying blind a little bit on the preview. Should have a few thoughts though as the Kings visit the Devils.

It’s hard not to look at last night’s win over the Islanders and picture the game going similarly,…

[66
385,99
post-892730","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nhl","tag-nhl","tag-sports
["GET
