\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been away too long,\u201d Jay-Z<\/a> told a hyped-up SoFi Stadium<\/a> crowd soon after taking the stage on Friday night. The rap icon was met with cheers as he, at last, brought his yearlong victory tour to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndeed, it\u2019s been close to a decade since Jay last played a full-fledged solo concert<\/a> in the city, with Shawn Carter closing out his 4:44 Tour across the street at the Forum in 2017 and playing the Rose Bowl for his joint On the Run Tour with Beyonc\u00e9 a year later. After a historic three-night run in New York at Yankee Stadium <\/a>and a few more shows in London and Paris, not to mention an eight-part HBO docuseries <\/a>directed by Rick Rubin, it\u2019s finally L.A.\u2019s turn, as Jay kicked off the first of two much-anticipated concerts Friday night in celebration of the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt and 25th anniversary of The Blueprint.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe result was a career-spanning tour de force from one of hip-hop\u2019s most seminal figures, and perhaps more Yankee hats and jerseys in the crowd than SoFi Stadium has ever seen. Kicking off just before 9:30 p.m. local time, the show opened with a video of Jay and Beyonc\u00e9 alone in the seats at Yankee Stadium, with Bey behind him playing with her husband\u2019s hair.<\/p>\n

\n\tFlanked by an impressive backing band and starting the night with \u201cHovi Baby,\u201d Jay powered through a collection of hits and fan favorites for two hours, from \u201cFuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt\u201d to \u201cRun This Town,\u201d \u201cHard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),\u201d \u201cLucifer\u201d and \u201c99 Problems.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLet me take you back to my home for a second,\u201d Jay told the crowd before launching into \u201cEmpire State of Mind\u201d toward the end of the evening. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhereas Jay brought an overwhelming set of surprise superstar guests<\/a> to his shows in New York, including Eminem, Rihanna, Nas, Usher and wife Beyonc\u00e9, L.A.\u2019s opening night was comparably subdued in that department as he performed much more by himself. Still, his daughter Blue Ivy<\/a> did come out on the keys for \u201cThe Story of O.J.\u201d and \u201cDead Presidents,\u201d while Scarface joined for \u201cThis Can\u2019t Be Life\u201d and \u201cMind Playing Tricks on Me.\u201d DJ Khaled<\/a> and John Legend<\/a> helped close it down for the last song for \u201cGod Did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMuch of the audience was of course waiting in anticipation Friday night wondering if Jay would address or confirm the reports that he\u2019d chosen himself as headliner for the Super Bowl Halftime show in February. It\u2019d have been a perfect time to make any news on the matter, performing in the very venue hosting the big game, though the world will have to wait, as Jay didn\u2019t so much as reference the news on Friday, keeping it very much about the current show at hand. <\/p>\n

\n\tPerhaps he\u2019s saving some more headline news as he finishes his L.A. stand \u2014 and his broader Jay-Z 30 shows \u2014 on Saturday night. <\/p>\n
