Early this summer, in a\u00a0pristine, limestone mountain range in the East Java province of Indonesia, Mohammad Nur Nasikin met with the father and son pictured here. His aim was to capture a character from\u00a0a treasured Indonesian theatrical dance and art\u00a0form called Reog\u00a0Ponorogo.<\/p>\n
\u201cBujang Ganong is one of the characters in the dance; a young regent who is agile, skilful and clever,\u201d Nasikin explains, \u201cMr\u00a0Hanafie, on the left, is a true artist, skilled in many Javanese arts. He\u2019s wearing the traditional costume worn by a Bujang Ganong dancer: a\u00a0wooden ganong mask,\u00a0and a\u00a0bright red waistcoat, a\u00a0shoulder cloth known as a\u00a0sembong, and loose\u2011fitting trousers called katok panji. At his feet is his drummer \u2013 his son Tirta, which means \u2018water\u2019 in Javanese.\u201d<\/p>\n
The energetic movements of the character made it easy to\u00a0capture a range of shots, Nasikin notes. When he returned home,\u00a0Nasikin showed his own 12-year-old son,\u00a0and explained the importance of preserving culture passed from ancestors.<\/p>\n
