\n\tAfter Jeff Garlin<\/a> left the ABC<\/a> comedy The Goldbergs<\/a> following an HR investigation stemming from multiple complaints about his behavior, he struggled mentally to the point that he considered ending his life. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had a nervous breakdown, and I was going to commit suicide,\u201d the actor said this week on Ted Danson<\/a>\u2018s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast.<\/p>\n

\n\tGarlin contacted his and Danson\u2019s fellow Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/a> co-star Susie Essman<\/a>, who got Garlin\u2019s friends to help him get treatment.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI reached out to Susie [Essman], and I said, \u2018I hate when people don\u2019t reach out, but at noon today I will be dead. I\u2019m letting you know I will be dead.\u2019,\u201d the actor recalled.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd she called [ex-wife] Marla, and she called [girlfriend] Sari and my friend, Brad Morris,\u201d he said. \u201cMy girlfriend and my ex-wife called him. He\u2019s one of my best friends. He watched me while they were looking for a place for me to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUltimately Garlin checked into rehab in Cincinnati, Ohio, and underwent dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which helped him overcome his suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was no longer suicidal,\u201d he said. \u201cThey helped get me to a point where I could stand, and then I went out in the world and it took time between therapy and medication for bipolar all that stuff to where I felt kind of whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2022, Garlin revealed he was bipolar, recently claiming the undiagnosed mental health condition affected his behavior on The Goldbergs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tGarlin said he\u2019s \u201cnow feeling really good\u201d and is \u201cvery content,\u201d adding that he\u2019s sharing his mental health struggles to raise awareness.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe point is \u2026 for people who do what we do, we get just as dark as you do,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have bad days just like you do. And I, Jeff Garlin, comedian, joyful gentleman, was going to end his life. But I\u2019m grateful that I had friends and family. And then people have been so supportive of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGarlin left The Goldbergs in December 2021 after more than eight seasons playing father Murray Goldberg. The mutual decision between Garlin and production company Sony Pictures Television came during production on the ABC series\u2019 ninth season and followed investigations from HR and Vanity Fair<\/a>, with the latter reporting on an alleged pattern of verbal and physical conduct that made staffers uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy opinion is, I have my process about how I\u2019m funny, in terms of the scene and what I have to do. They feel that it makes for a quote \u2018unsafe\u2019 workspace. Now, mind you, my silliness making an unsafe workspace \u2014 I don\u2019t understand how that is. And I\u2019m on a comedy show.
