Many of these projects didn’t even try to pass for respectable cinema, lazily cashing in on an idea or star power and expecting audiences to fall in line. Naturally, the interest often isn’t there, and viewers can smell a dud a mile away.

Even some of 2026’s more anticipated movies, from horror sequels and reboots to comedy revivals, left fans disappointed, bored, and angry. Others were sloppy efforts to ride the wave of culture war topics and trends, only for the directors to leave moviegoers with an absolute disaster on their hands. These films are what happens when a poor vision, low budget and general disinterest collide.

Mercy Is War of the Worlds All Over Again

In 2025, Prime Video released its disastrous Zoom call meeting version of War of the Worlds, only to repeat the format with Chris Pratt in Mercy. A blatant attempt at ripping off Minority Report, it’s set in a near future when police departments use AI programs as judge and jury. When the system’s champion, Detective Chris Raven, is put on trial for the murder of his wife, he must convince the computer to help clear his name.

Mercy has all the nuance and depth of a throwaway 2000s procedural crime show, right down to the predictable twist any mystery buff will see coming a mile away. It was like the studio looked back on its War of the Worlds failure and doubled down, this time cashing in on the wave of AI anxiety in society. It’s the kind of film that pushes its audience to question why it was made at all.

Run Hide Fight: Infidels Doesn’t Even Try

Jonathan Majors as Saunders in Run Hide Fight: InfidelsImage via Bonfire Legend

In 2026, The Daily Wire continued its venture into the realm of questionable political propaganda dressed up as terrible “cinema” with Run Hide Fight: Infidels. After a personal scandal ousted him from the MCU, Jonathan Majors joined the project in the role of ex-Navy SEAL Saunders. While giving a speech at a liberal college, the campus is laid siege by a group of Islamic terrorists, forcing survivors to band together to fight back.

Run Hide Fight: Infidels is a movie so bad even its target audience, who had every reason to bite their tongue and praise it, couldn’t avoid criticizing it. Between treating stereotypes like laws of physics and a tired insistence on “offending” the audience, everything falls flat. What the movie lacks in substance, it somehow does even worse in effects and editing, making the whole experience a dull attempt to do Die Hard for the umpteenth time.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Set Itself Up For Failure

Warner Bros.

Audiences were left surprised when, midway through rumors of a return of Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy, they heard that Lee Cronin was making his own version. His, however, went the same route as so many Blumhouse horror flicks before turning a classic idea into a low-budget and generic slog. It follows the recovery of a missing girl as she’s brought home from Egypt, only for the family to realize something sinister has come back with her.

Blumhouse has shown itself capable of producing great horror, as has Cronin himself. This, however, simply wasn’t it. If anything, it was reminiscent of the studio’s Wolf Man, a lifeless capitalization of a beloved property with little of its substance. It felt less like anything connected to what fans wanted to see from a Mummy flick than it did the latest Sinister or Insidious duplicate.

The Runner Continues the Churn of Low-Rate Action

Gal Gadot in The RunnerAmazon MGM Studios

Gal Gadot is no stranger to incurring the ire of audiences, but Prime Video’s The Runner took it to another level. The Wonder Woman actress plays Maia, a wealthy attorney who learns her son has been taken hostage. To see him again, she must follow the directions of a mysterious caller, who leads her deeper into a plot of deception in London.

The Runner is the latest case of a studio putting out cheap action attached to a well-known star and hoping it will be enough to get people to tune in. In this case, it makes the tackiest Liam Neeson B-action plot feel like a masterpiece, and is the sort of film where if someone’s seen the formula once, they’ve seen it a thousand times. Its clichés could be forgiven if it was at least a well-made movie, and not the choppily-edited bore fest people got.

Scary Movie 6 Lost the Franchise’s Edge

SCARY MOVIE, (aka SCARY MOVIE 6), from left: Anna Faris, Regina Hall, 2026Quantrell Colbert / © Paramount Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection

Back in 2000, the Wayans brothers delighted and entertained a generation of horror fans with the Scary Movie franchise. It looked at what Wes Craven did with Scream and decided to go full-blown farce parody, channeling their inner Mel Brooks for the first two flicks. When the brothers announced their return to the series, fans were left divided, questioning whether its brand of humor would translate into 2026. It did not.

As funny as the Wayans can be, Scary Movie 6 felt instantly dated, capitalizing too hard and too forcefully on modern discourse around comedy. It felt less a genuine commentary on the state of horror than the creators trying to become relevant again through predictable “are you offended?” jokes. As far as comedies go, this will go down as one of the biggest missed opportunities of the decade.

The Strangers: Chapter 3 Concluded the Disappointing Reboot

Scarecrow in his burlap sack mask from The Strangers Chapter 3Image via Lionsgate/ Courtesy Everett Collection

The Strangers once boasted the reputation of being the single most chilling American slasher of the 2000s, but The Strangers: Chapter 3 ruined it. Continuing the updated story of Dollface, Scarecrow and Pin-Up Girl, it continues the story of Maya after she escaped the trio in the previous entry. What follows is a slow-moving series of plot contrivances more reminiscent of a cringe-fest like Texas Chainsaw 3D than Bryan Bertino’s original.

There’s still a great franchise buried somewhere within the new versions of The Strangers, but it was nowhere to be found in the latest installment. As much as the creators tried, this film proved you can’t just slap the same recognizable costumes onto a terribly executed story and expect people will show up. Audience investment in this franchise had already been exhausted by the prior two installments, and this one killed it.

Return to Silent Hill Proves the Franchise Keeps Getting Worse

Jeremy Irvine in Return to Silent HillImage via Ciniverse

The Silent Hill franchise has demonstrated its ability to be the scariest thing in horror when handled right, but Return to Silent Hill was a disappointment. It follows James Sunderland as he returns to the town to find his ex-wife, only to find the entire area in a state of horrific decay. When monsters attack, he pushes deeper into the rotted buildings to try and find Mary and escape before it’s too late.

Return to Silent Hill continues the habit of studios squeezing blood from the stone of tentpole franchises, seeing what they could do with a shoestring budget. It couldn’t be more obvious that there was hope fans would simply show up for the long-awaited continuation. The outcome is an uninspired mess full of poorly-written characters, a lack of the suspense that made the first film and its games so good, and no real hook.

Citizen Vigilante Will Go Down As A Spectacular Creative Disaster

Armie Hammer holds a handgun in Citizen Vigilante.Image via Quiver Distribution

Uwe Boll is no stranger to controversy, but his latest film, Citizen Vigilante, managed to make all his past work seem practically mainstream in sensibility. It follows the aftermath of the rape of a woman by immigrants who went free, spurring an ex-US Army officer to take matters into his own hands. Armed with a pistol and driven by a brutal sense of social vengeance, he tortures and murders everyone he deems responsible for the miscarriage of justice.

Citizen Vigilante is everything wrong with the way the action-thriller genre can be misused as a vehicle for prejudice and sensationalist commentary. It pretends to be something of a thinking man’s Taken, when in reality it’s anything but. This was a movie stitched together by rage-driven social media algorithms, and it shows. In every sense of the word, Uwe Boll’s Citizen Vigilante is a grim slog through modern culture wars, and the most unwatchable movie of 2026.

From sci-fi to horror, Hollywood has never failed to give audiences movies so bad that they felt unwatchable,…

[52
88,206
post-894850","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-movies
["GET
