Several homes have been red-tagged in recent weeks due to flooding and damage caused by high surf and high tide conditions.

Long Beach homeowners along the peninsula are continuing to assess damage and reinforce their properties as strong surf continues threatening homes.

Along the Long Beach Peninsula, residents are preparing for the possibility of additional damage after months of coastal flooding and erosion.

“It’s a little daunting but we’re going to try and do what we can,” said Marilyn Flint of Long Beach.

Marilyn and Janice Flint have lived along the Long Beach Peninsula for more than 60 years and said they are watching ongoing efforts to protect the shoreline.

“I’m actually optimistic that they can do as much repair as quickly as they can,” Janice Flint said.

Those repair efforts are part of the Alamitos Bay Entrance Channel Dredge Project, an $11 million undertaking that is dredging sand from the ocean floor and transporting it through pipelines back onto the shoreline.

The work has altered beachfront views for some residents, while crews use bulldozers throughout the day and into the night to build up the beach and reinforce protective berms.

“I think they’re a little bit late I think this should’ve started before – I feel so bad for my neighbors who have lost so much,” said Debbie Autrey of Long Beach.

High tides between 7.5 and 8 feet are expected during the morning hours through Thursday over all coastal areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said Monday through Wednesday’s tides could challenge the current record of 7.93 feet set in San Pedro on Jan. 10, 2005. Records go back to 1924.

The coastal flood advisory runs from 5 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Thursday, and applies to Los Angeles and Ventura County beaches, as well as the Malibu coast.

“Minor coastal flooding is likely purely based on the high tides. While these tides might be the highest of all-time, similar extreme tides in the past tell us that coastal communities should expect shallow flooding of harbor walkways, beach parking lots and bike paths,” the NWS said.

Areas of Long Beach, Malibu and Newport Beach have already seen substantial damage to homes from high surf in recent weeks.

The weather service said there was a moderate rip current risk during the advisory period.

Erosion is also another serious issue along the coast. The city has ramped up a major dredging operation, bringing in more than 400,000 cubic yards of sand from Alamitos Bay in an effort to restore what was once a large beach area.

“I’ve been down here since 2001. I’ve never seen it this bad,” said Larry Manzo of Long Beach. “It’s really sad to see the neighbors deal with this.”

Over in Orange County, beaches are under a coastal flood warning with high tide also expected to reach at least 7 feet. Newport Beach, which experienced high tides of up to 8 feet, declared a state of emergency and used more than 100,000 cubic yards of sand to reinforce the area around Balboa Pier.

City News Service contributed to this report.

Copyright © 2026 KABC Television, LLC.
