Despite its longevity and pop culture prevalence, it’s always been an underdog. One way it persists is by taking risks, and the new film will be its biggest risk in history.

Sure, it features iconic alien species, nuanced sociopolitical allegory, and sci-fi gizmos that have inspired real-world technology. But the secret weapon of Star Trek is not in its phaser banks or photon torpedo tubes. It’s the characters. Yet the new film in development at Paramount after a series of mergers by its parent company Skydance won’t feature any fans recognize. Legendary, beloved figures like James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, or everyone’s favorite logical Vulcan Spock will be absent from its story.

How The Characters In Star Trek Helped It Last 60 Years On TV And In Film

Despite being a pop culture sensation, Star Trek: The Original Series was the most expensive show of its day. NBC tried to cancel it, but fans mounted a letter-writing campaign that saved it for a single season. Years after its cancellation, fans picketed NBC, and the network granted them an animated sequel series. Thanks to Spock actor Leonard Nimoy, the original cast returned (save for Walter Koenig) to voice the characters. Six years later, in another unprecedented move, they returned for The Motion Picture, which picked up the story where the shows left off.

No TV series and its cast ever had a second act as a feature film franchise before. Yet, it was so successful that by the time of its 20th anniversary, Paramount brought Star Trek back to television. Again, no sequel TV series ever outperformed its predecessor. The Next Generation did (spawning three more spinoffs), and then they replaced The Original Series characters in the films. Yet, in both TNG’s pilot and its first film, Generations, there were cast members from TOS on hand to pass the proverbial torch.

The same thing happened with the spinoffs. Picard was in the Deep Space Nine premiere, and Ferengi bartender Quark sent off the Voyager crew. Even the prequel series Enterprise had a character from First Contact send it off and, more controversially, characters from TNG in its finale. When Paramount rebooted the film franchise in 2009, they did it with new actors playing alternate reality versions of Kirk, Spock, Doctor McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura. The characters have always been the heart of this universe.

The New Star Trek Film Will Abandon The Winning Formula For Its Reboot

Stills from the Star Trek Kelvin Timeline moviesImage via Paramount

Writers and directors John Frances Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are reportedly still at work developing the 15th Star Trek film. Yet, unlike every past iteration, their story will feature brand-new characters in a brand-new ship in a previously unseen era. In fact, rumors suggest that unlike even the alternate reality films in the “Kelvin Timeline,” this new movie will dump the 60 years’ worth of continuity that made the franchise what it is. That would be a drastic, tragic mistake, because there are countless ways around the so-called “canon problem.” Nonetheless, what Goldstein and Daley are trying to do robs them of an advantage every Star Trek filmmaker had before them.

The shared continuity made the Star Trek films unique, at least in the decades before the term “cinematic universe” entered the vernacular. The movies wasted no time establishing their characters or their relationships, because they were already well-known. Even people who never saw a single episode knew the phrase “beam me up, Scotty” and that Kirk and Spock are the best of pals. The shared history and experience the actors had with their characters lived on screen, and casual moviegoers could feel it even if they didn’t know the specifics.

Even better, new fans who found this universe through the films could bide their time between sequels watching reruns that aired each day in syndication. In the age of streaming, catching up on the previous adventures of the starship Enterprise was even easier. The new storytellers don’t have that history to draw from. They will have three hours at most to introduce a new ship, a new crew, and establish their dynamic, all while they navigate a conflict with galactic consequences that also has something to say about the current societal moment. It’s a tall order.

Star Trek Has Made A Legacy Of Beating The Odds Before

Image via Paramount

Even with these self-imposed hurdles, the Star Trek reboot can be a sci-fi event. Because of the limitless potential of the cosmos and what could be out there, Star Trek can tell any kind of story. It’s why the modern era of this universe has supported dark thrillers, inspirational adventures, animated comedy, and — with Starfleet Academy — teen melodrama. For all the myriad characters throughout the more than a dozen series, the dynamic at play remains familiar and captivating.

At its core, Star Trek is a story about dedicated professionals working together to create a better universe for everyone. When faced with conflict, they respond with curiosity and compassion. If that approach doesn’t work, they strive to defeat the villains and save innocent lives by working together. Scientific and moral ideals bind them as a team, even when one of their own fails to live up to them. Star Trek takes familiar archetypes and marries them with an optimistic and aspirational tone that speaks to almost all audiences.

Daley and Goldstein are challenging themselves as filmmakers, but they are also stress-testing Star Trek itself. Without hours of television episodes as a foundation, they are going to attempt to tell a brand-new story that fits into this framework. If they are successful, the fresh faces of this previously unknown vessel will rise to the occasion as heroes as lovable as Kirk, Picard, Spock, and the rest of its iconic characters. The people in its stories have always been Star Trek’s secret weapon, but its core tenets are what make them connect with viewers of all ages and backgrounds.

      TV Show(s)

Star trek, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Animated, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek Lower Decks, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Lower Decks

      Cast

William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula

      Created by

                                           Gene Roddenberry

Given the history of the universe created by Gene Roddenberry and owned by Paramount, it’s almost fitting that…

[52
88,206
post-895948","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-movies
["GET
