The guards were fired last week<\/p>\n

Two fired Fayette County jail guards are now charged with felony aggravated assault and unsworn falsification, along with other charges.<\/p>\n

Ryan Sigley, 26, and Amadeus Marinucci, 27, were fired from their jobs last week<\/a> during an investigation into excessive force involving inmate Robert Stimmel.<\/p>\n

The pair have been under scrutiny for the past month since Stimmel was hospitalized with a brain bleed and multiple bruises on his face on Oct. 8.<\/p>\n

In a statement from Fayette County District Attorney Michael A. Aubele, he said that Stimmel had assaulted a correctional officer in the strip-search area and was restrained. “During this use of force,” said Aubele, “Stimmel suffered injuries that were not consistent with the information provided to the Administration.”<\/p>\n

Aubele told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reporter Felicity Taylor that it happened in a strip search room where surveillance is prohibited under law. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe should have never been taken to that area if he was going to be physically combative. And we believe he was taken to that area because he wasn\u2019t physically combative,\u201d Aubele said, “We were essentially told that he took a swing at the officers and that the officers had to restrain him. However, based on the injuries that he suffered, we don\u2019t believe that the statements that we were given and the reports that were written comport with the injuries that the inmate actually had. We had multiple facial fractures. We had a brain bleed. And, all of that, again, required treatment at a hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

With no video of the alleged attack, investigators relied on interviews and security footage from other areas of the jail. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe were able to follow the inmate from the area, from the intake area to the strip search area, and then to his cell. He was obviously very injured when he left that strip search area,\u201d Aubele said. <\/p>\n

Aubele said Stimmel was verbally abusive and uncooperative when police brought him in, but added that did not justify the level of force used, particularly by Sigley. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an individual who\u2019s about five foot four, 120 pounds, and these guards are significantly bigger than him. And, you know, this could have been even worse than it turned out to be,\u201d Aubele said.<\/p>\n

During the investigation, Aubele told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4, “We’ve obviously had some violation of policy, or the board wouldn’t have made a decision that they did.”<\/p>\n

Sigley and Marinucci’s preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 12. <\/p>\n
