Indiana’s search for a new general manager comes at a particularly important moment, following a 2026 campaign that demonstrated both the team’s championship potential and its limitations.<\/p>\n

Sophie Cunningham\u2019s future with Caitlin Clark and the Fever is uncertain after front-office shakeup<\/p>\n

Led by Caitlin Clark<\/a>, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston, the Fever averaged a league-leading 96 points per game. However, defensive shortcomings proved costly during their first-round playoff elimination against the Las Vegas Aces.<\/p>\n

The incoming executive must therefore make difficult financial decisions while finding reinforcements capable of turning Indiana into a more balanced contender.<\/p>\n

Clark’s long-term future represents one of the most significant decisions awaiting the new general manager, although the star guard has already indicated that winning remains her priority.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old is eligible for an Exceptional Performance Initial Contract extension, potentially placing her among the WNBA’s highest-paid players.<\/p>\n

However, Clark suggested during her October 8 exit interview that she would consider the wider implications of her contract before making a decision.<\/p>\n

“I just want to do what’s best for the team and make sure we have the opportunity to be able to win championships,” Clark said.<\/p>\n

“My focus is on winning. I certainly know what I deserve and what I’m worth, but at the same time, sometimes you have to make sacrifices.”<\/p>\n

Clark also emphasized her commitment to remaining with the franchise, stating: “No matter what, I’m going to be here.”<\/p>\n

Her position could provide Indiana with valuable flexibility as it attempts to accommodate several major contracts.<\/p>\n

Mitchell’s free agency presents immediate challenge<\/p>\n

While Clark’s future appears relatively secure, Mitchell’s situation requires a more immediate decision.<\/p>\n

The veteran guard is approaching unrestricted free agency after earning approximately $1.4 million in 2026, with another substantial contract potentially awaiting her.<\/p>\n

Retaining Mitchell would preserve one of the league’s most productive backcourts, but Indiana must also account for Boston’s four-year, $6.3 million extension.<\/p>\n

IndyStar reporter Chloe Peterson believes managing those competing financial commitments should be the incoming executive’s central responsibility.<\/p>\n

“Indiana’s new GM should be someone who can, above all, navigate this salary cap situation they’re in,” Peterson said.<\/p>\n

“They’re running out of space already. This new GM needs to figure out how to make it all work, either through trades, the draft, or smart free agency moves, including if they themselves want to retain Mitchell for 2027.”<\/p>\n

Pressure to build championship-winning defense<\/p>\n

Financial planning represents only part of the challenge awaiting Cox’s replacement.<\/p>\n

Indiana must also strengthen its defense without sacrificing the offensive chemistry that has made the team so competitive.<\/p>\n

Peterson warned that the next general manager will need to handle intense public attention surrounding the franchise.<\/p>\n

“The new GM also needs to have a form of thick skin,” she said. “There is a microscope around the Fever, especially, and that comes with more fans, detractors, and trolls.”<\/p>\n

Pacers Sports & Entertainment is overseeing the search, with a new appointment expected before January’s free-agency period.<\/p>\n

The Fever already possess the foundation of a potential championship team.
