Kennedy Jr. <\/a>has announced that he will allow the widespread use of unapproved peptide injections <\/a>despite the Food and Drug Administration previously advising people not to use them. <\/p>\n Under Kennedy\u2019s new policy, the Health and Human Services Department will not take enforcement action against doctors, pharmacies and other facilities that sell six peptide compounds.<\/p>\n Compounding is a process in which a medically supervised person combines or alters ingredients of a drug to create a medication tailored to that person\u2019s needs. There are already some FDA-approved peptide compounds, including insulin for diabetes and GLP-1 drugs<\/a> for weight loss. <\/p>\n Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and while HHS admitted in a document<\/a> shared on their website Wednesday that these drugs can \u201cpose risks to patients,\u201d the department believes \u201cthere is significant interest in the use of these peptides in compounding.\u201d<\/p>\n HHS argued that easing access to peptides will discourage people from using \u201cresearch-use-only peptides\u201d made in other countries and give people a \u201cmore controlled alternative.\u201d <\/p>\n Kennedy has \u201cdetermined that the policy advances patient choice and freedom while appropriately protecting patient safety,\u201d according to the document. <\/p>\n FDA scientists had little input on Kennedy\u2019s decision to ease access to the peptide compounds and opposed the changes, six people familiar with the matter told the Associated Press<\/a>. <\/p>\n Kennedy told podcaster Joe Rogan<\/a> \u2014 who endorsed Trump in the 2024 election but has also pushed back on the administration over several issues<\/a> \u2014 that he was \u201ca big fan of peptides.\u201d<\/p>\n The health secretary said he\u2019s used peptides on a couple of injuries and \u201cwith really good effect\u201d in the February episode. <\/p>\n Peptides are short chains of amino acids that can help with hormone activity, digestion, tissue repair and more. <\/p>\n
