I took too many drugs.\u2019 Brian couldn\u2019t get up in the morning without somebody getting him up. (The Unnamed Press)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mike [Love] and Carl [Wilson] came into my office and said to Brian, \u2018Hey, we have the opportunity to write a song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/movies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">for this movie, [1988\u2019s] \u2018Cocktail,\u2019&#8221;<\/a> said Mason.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u2019It\u2019s going to be starring Tom Cruise. It\u2019s really great. We\u2019d love you to join us. And Brian was really excited. He said, \u2018Oh, I\u2019d love to do that.\u2019 But later in the evening, Brian called and said, \u2018I shouldn\u2019t do that. Dr. Landy said I shouldn\u2019t do that. Well, that turned out to be \u2018Kokomo,\u2019 the biggest hit the Beach Boys had had probably forever. (Touchstone Pictures\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When he heard it, and when I heard it, we went, \u2018Oh my gosh, was that a missed opportunity?\u2019&#8221; Mason recalled.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH: BEACH BOYS FOUNDER BRIAN WILSON HAD ONE BIG MUSIC REGRET: PAL<\/p>\n<p>Mason wrote that Landy refused to let Wilson participate unless he, too, were listed as a writer on the song. However, Carl and Bruce Johnson, along with Love, refused. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">They went on to write &#8220;Kokomo&#8221;<\/a> without Wilson\u2019s input. It was a decision that Wilson deeply regretted over the years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brian is truly a giant teddy bear and genius who regrets bad decisions and lives for better ones,&#8221; wrote Mason.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mason\u2019s book, Wilson\u2019s struggles began in 1968, when he quit performing and devoted himself to songwriting instead. (Mark Sullivan\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He eventually became so bizarre that he would sit at the piano in his living room surrounded by actual sand that had been dumped in big piles in a sort of playpen,&#8221; Mason wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was forsaking his young family \u2014 wife Marilyn Rovell, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">singer with the group the Honeys<\/a>, and young kids Carnie and Wendy \u2014 for his strange kind of creative peace. Four years passed, and he never left the house. (\u00a0Mark Sullivan\/Contour by Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>In 1975, a &#8220;devastated&#8221; Marilyn brought in Landy, a psychologist known for his unconventional 24-hour treatment of celebrities. Wilson, who reportedly feared being committed to a psychiatric hospital, completely surrendered. He padlocked Wilson\u2019s fridge, put the star on a diet and shooed away drug-enabling pals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/music\/news\/brian-wilson-eugene-landy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Telegraph<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Eugene Landy [helped] Brian overcome his fears of everything,&#8221; Mason told Fox News Digital. &#8220;I would call it an agoraphobia. . . . He feared going outside. . . . And he needed outside help.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/brian-wilson-kokomo-regret.jpg\" alt=\"Brian Wilson in a suit with his eyes closed.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Brian Wilson got in shape with Dr. Eugene Landy&#8217;s help. But in 1976, Landy was fired over a dispute involving fees, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2006-mar-29-me-landy29-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> reported. When Wilson was regressing into drugs and obesity, Landy was rehired six years later, the outlet shared. The 24-hour therapy resumed from 1983 to 1986. Manager Tom Hulett, who knew that Mason was friendly with the Beach Boys, suggested that he could be &#8220;a strong, independent balance.&#8221; In 1984, Mason was hired.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was asked . . . if I would be Brian\u2019s lawyer, and I agreed,&#8221; said Mason. &#8220;At that time, Brian was, I think, doing better, but he had a lot of issues. . . . Brian came to my office at least once a week. Wilson was controlled by both prescription drugs and the &#8220;Landy handlers&#8221; who &#8220;secretly or openly recorded everything Brian and anyone else said&#8221; for the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>No decision was made without Landy\u2019s approval, leaving Mason bewildered and frustrated.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/beach-boys.jpg\" alt=\"The Beach Boys walking on the beach holding a surfboard.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>The Beach Boys circa 1962 in California. At one point, he was co-credited as a songwriter on several tracks. The goal was to stop Landy from further influencing Wilson both personally and financially, the Los Angeles Times reported. The couple married in 1995.\u00a0 (Jeff Snyder\/FilmMagic\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The court ordered Landy to disassociate from Brian,&#8221; said Mason. &#8220;Ultimately, Landy\u2019s license to practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/west\/california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">psychotherapy in the state of California<\/a> was revoked. And Brian\u2019s second wife, Melinda, was able to keep Brian motivated to perform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He did a lot of shows,&#8221; said Mason. &#8220;He wrote songs, he did a lot of work. His health seemed to be pretty good. I saw Brian a number of times after I wasn\u2019t his lawyer, and he looked good. He felt good. Mason doesn\u2019t either.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have to say that, in Brian\u2019s case, I don\u2019t think there was a better outcome,&#8221; Mason explained. &#8220;Had Landy not become involved, Brian would have become an ineffective vegetable. Drugs and alcohol have led to the demise of too many people.
