This article features Lilli Tagger, the highest remaining seed after the top three seeds were eliminated. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for all five matches on the slate, but which players will advance to the quarterfinals?

WTA Guangzhou Day 4 Predictions
Maria Timofeeva vs Xinran Sun

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Maria Timofeeva has played well in the last month and was clinical in her first-round win over Teodora Kostovic. Timofeeva went after Kostovic’s second serve, and it paid off. 16-year-old Xinran Sun played another solid match to defeat Mananchaya Sawangkaew in straight sets. The Chinese player has impressed with her rally tolerance and work ethic and should improve every other aspect of her game as she gains experience. This is a close match to call, but Sun has the home-court advantage, so I’ll back her.

Prediction: Sun in 3

Anna Bondar vs Kaitlin Quevedo

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Anna Bondar produced a dominant performance to upset the top seed, Daria Snigur, in straight sets. Bondar was exceptional on serve, firing eight aces and winning close to 80% of first-serve points. Kaitlin Quevedo has shown her capability in São Paulo last month and is improving rapidly. However, Bondar is the slight favorite at WTA Guangzhou if she can replicate her first-round form.

Prediction: Bondar in 3

Katerina Siniakova vs Claire Liu

Head-to-Head: Siniakova 0-3 Liu

Katerina Siniakova came back from a set down to defeat Lanlana Tararudee and extend her win streak to six. Siniakova is a former semifinalist at WTA Guangzhou and will like her chances to make another deep run. Claire Liu has never lost to Siniakova, but their last meeting was in 2023, and Siniakova is playing better tennis right now. This is a great opportunity for Siniakova to register her first win against the American.

Prediction: Siniakova in 3

Zeynep Sonmez vs Jil Teichmann

Head-to-Head: Sonmez 1-1 Teichmann

Zeynep Sonmez defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo in a tough first-round match at WTA Guangzhou. Sonmez had to be patient as the Spaniard’s backhand slices were deep and didn’t provide much opportunity to advance to the net. Jil Teichmann got her first tour-level win on hard courts, defeating Simona Waltert in straight sets. Teichmann isn’t at her best, but her grinding makes her dangerous. Sonmez may need to be patient once again to win.

Prediction: Sonmez in 2

Lilli Tagger vs Magda Linette

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Fourth seed Lilli Tagger got a popular win over Venus Williams in the first round of WTA Guangzhou, dropping just four games. Williams played well from the baseline, but Tagger did a great job of moving her around and exposing her movement. Tagger is the highest remaining seed in the draw and will look to get her second tour-level title. Magda Linette hasn’t won back-to-back matches since June, and I don’t see her breaking that streak this week.

Prediction: Tagger in 3

Main Photo Credit: John E.
