Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library<\/a><\/p>\n

has earned international recognition after being named the 2026 Architectural Design of the Year by the Architecture MasterPrize, honoring its innovative design and integration with the rugged Badlands landscape.<\/p>\n

The award recognizes the collaborative efforts of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation and its design and construction partners, including <\/p>\n

JLG Architects<\/a><\/p>\n

, international design firm Sn\u00f8hetta, landscape architecture firm Confluence and construction manager JE Dunn.<\/p>\n

The Architecture MasterPrize is an international competition recognizing excellence, creativity and innovation in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, architectural products and photography. This year’s competition drew thousands of submissions from 95 countries.<\/p>\n

The library’s design reflects Roosevelt’s deep connection to western North Dakota, where his experiences in the Badlands during the 1880s helped shape his conservation philosophy and later influenced his presidency.<\/p>\n

Situated along a bluff overlooking Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the <\/p>\n

Little Missouri River valley<\/a><\/p>\n

, the building blends into the surrounding terrain, creating an immersive experience that connects visitors with the natural environment.<\/p>\n

“The landscape defines the presidential library for Theodore Roosevelt,” the Architecture MasterPrize stated on its website.<\/p>\n

The organization praised the collaboration among architects, landscape architects and ecologists in creating a structure that incorporates the site’s environment, history and ecological significance.<\/p>\n

“Visitors don’t just learn about the 26th president; they learn from him: to be bold isn’t always to be loud,” the organization stated.<\/p>\n

JLG Architects CEO Michelle Mongeon Allen said the recognition highlights the project’s ambitious vision and commitment to conservation.<\/p>\n

“It’s exciting to see Architecture MasterPrize recognize the extraordinary vision and conservation mission that brought the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library to life,” Allen said.<\/p>\n

“The remote and rugged terrain of the Badlands asked more of everyone: more care, more ingenuity, and more willingness to challenge the architectural status quo,” she added.<\/p>\n

The recognition marks the library’s third award since its grand opening July 4.<\/p>\n

Previous honors include the Forest Stewardship Council Leadership Award \u2014 Built Environment and the Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois.<\/p>\n

Architecture MasterPrize Managing Director David Teravagimov highlighted the library’s environmental integration as an example of architecture that contributes to its surroundings.<\/p>\n

“This year’s top awards went to a presidential library that disappears into its landscape, a timber office for a wind-energy company, and a park that cleans Bangkok’s water,” Teravagimov said.<\/p>\n

“They are very different buildings with one thing in common: Each gives something back to the place it stands in.”<\/p>\n

Entries were evaluated by an international jury of architecture professionals and critics based on design excellence, originality, functionality and sustainability.<\/p>\n

The Architecture MasterPrize has recognized outstanding architectural achievements worldwide for more than a decade.<\/p>\n

The library and other winners will be honored Nov. 24 at the Architecture MasterPrize awards gala at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain.<\/p>\n
