One argument is that nobody wants to jeopardize U.S. national security. Republican and Democratic administrations alike have cited national security concerns as <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7345873\/trump-china-tariff-war-economic-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" aria-description=\"opens in new tab\">justification<\/a> for widening the aperture of exemptions to unrestricted trade to include climate change, public health, energy security, and other issues. The Biden administration, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/blog\/biden-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" aria-description=\"opens in new tab\">maintained <\/a>most of President Trump\u2019s first-term tariffs with a few exceptions. Increased Section 301 tariffs on China were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/fact-sheet-president-biden-takes-action-protect-american-workers-and-businesses-from\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" aria-description=\"opens in new tab\">explained<\/a> as critical to supporting \u201cstrategic sectors,\u201d including batteries, critical minerals, electric vehicles, ship-to-shore cranes, solar cells, semiconductors, and steel and aluminum.
