Bills right tackle Spencer Brown says he needed to be heavily medicated to play in Week 6 against the Raiders after suffering a back injury in Week 5 against the Rams.<\/p>\n
Asked about his presence on the injury report, Brown says it stemmed from his back but wouldn\u2019t keep him off the field.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust lingering stuff from what\u2019s happened to me the last couple weeks here. And what happened in that LA game just kind of got nicked up and then I took enough drugs to sedate a small elephant when I was in LA,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n
Reporters chuckled at that description, but Brown said it\u2019s just a part of life for an NFL player.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody\u2019s laughing. It\u2019s protocol. NFL signed off on it, so it\u2019s OK,\u201d Brown said. \u201cBut yeah, just took care of the body the best way I knew how and got through the Vegas game and played pretty well and got on the bye week and kind of bit me in the butt a little bit. So, just taking it easy and smart.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brown said if he\u2019s physically capable of getting on the field, he\u2019ll always play and make no excuses.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do pride myself on being ready every single day,\u201d Brown said. \u201cWhen I\u2019m out there, I\u2019m out there. There\u2019s not going to be any, \u2018He\u2019s nicked up, he\u2019s got this going on, that\u2019s why he\u2019s not playing very well.\u2019 That\u2019s not me at all. If I\u2019m out there in between the lines, I\u2019m good enough to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
No one can question Brown\u2019s toughness, but it\u2019s fair to question whether it\u2019s a good idea for the NFL to allow players to play when they\u2019re injured badly enough that they need that kind of medication. The league is facing renewed scrutiny in recent weeks for issues including Jalen Hurts\u2019 blood clot and Christian Watson returning to Thursday night\u2019s game after going to the hospital with a broken rib.
