BYU isn’t the only local school dealing with vulgar chants of religious discrimination at sporting events.

The latest profane chants were targeted at Utah State during its football game at Texas State last weekend, prompting a statement issued by the Pac-12 Conference on Friday.

The chant was “(expletive) the Mormons,” which has occurred somewhat regularly at BYU football and basketball road contests across the country in recent years.

But this is the first major public instance of the chants being directed at Utah State.

“On Saturday, Oct. 24, the conference was notified of religiously discriminatory conduct directed at Utah State student-athletes and fans during Texas State’s home football game,” the statement read. “Similar conduct has occurred at games across college football this season, including one other of our own member institutions.

“There is no place for such behavior in any venue, nor should it be tolerated. The league has reviewed the preventive measures in place at both instances at Pac-12 venues this season, and will be working with its board of directors to strengthen fan conduct standards and accountability, both to prevent this behavior at our own games and to better protect our student-athletes and fans across any sporting events.”

In September, fans of another Pac-12 school, Colorado State, participated in the same chant when BYU visited Fort Collins. Colorado State apologized for the incident a few hours later.

Additionally, USC (2021), Oregon (2022), Providence (2024) and Cincinnati (2025) have all issued apologies to BYU for chants from their fans.

Utah State and Texas State are in their first season together as Pac-12 conference opponents.

BYU isn’t the only local school dealing with vulgar chants of religious discrimination at sporting events.
