(AP) \u2014 A historic ocean liner is a step closer to becoming the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-states-historic-ship-artificial-reef-florida-c9a58bd7182b2f576706598a88338bc1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">world\u2019s largest artificial reef<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Florida\u2019s Okaloosa County expect to sink the SS United States off the Gulf Coast during the second week of November. The exact dates could change because of weather.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ship-sinking-ss-united-states-artificial-reef-58da1c2ca7207d7c0774b22d80e21868\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ship will be sunk<\/a> about 22 nautical miles (41 kilometers) southwest of Destin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an exciting move forward to create a one-of-a-kind resource for the environment and for our tourism industry,\u201d county officials wrote in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The nearly 1,000-foot (305-meter) vessel shattered the trans-Atlantic speed record on its maiden voyage in 1952. Preservation groups tried to save the ship but were hindered by high costs.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters hope that sinking the ship will make it a barnacle-encrusted star among more than 500 artificial reefs and a signature diving attraction, helping to generate millions of dollars a year in local tourism spending for scuba shops, charter fishing boats and hotels.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
