Qualified dividend treatment reduces that bill. A Roth takes it to zero.

Roth Versus Taxable: $2,698 a Year on Four Dividend Legends

Each stock gets $150,000. Yields are forward yields, meaning each company’s annualized dividend divided by its October 30 closing price. For comparison, the same $17,985 taxed at ordinary income rates of 24% would cost $4,316. That gap explains why REIT-heavy portfolios, like the one in our earlier $600,000 analysis, rank first for Roth space. Blue chips still leave a real tax bill behind.

PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP | PEP Price Prediction): 4.31% yield, generating $6,466 a year. The highest yielder here creates the biggest tax drag. On safety, management cut FY2026 core EPS growth guidance to +2.5% to +3.5% because of rising input costs, so keep an eye on margins. The 50+ year streak of increases is still intact.
Chevron (NYSE:CVX): 3.02% yield, or $4,534. Third-quarter adjusted free cash flow came in at $14.2 billion, with net debt at 0.4 times adjusted EBITDA. That makes for a strong coverage read in a cyclical sector.
Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG): 2.69% yield, or $4,042. P&G has raised its dividend for 70 consecutive years and plans to pay over $10 billion in dividends in fiscal 2027.
J&J (NYSE:JNJ): 1.96% yield, or $2,942. It is the lowest yielder of the four, but J&J has 64 consecutive years of increases and $21 billion in full-year free cash flow guidance, giving it a long path to growing payouts that face no taxes in a Roth.

Bracket Multiplier Jumps at the Top

The 3.8% net investment income tax applies above $200,000 of modified AGI for single filers and $250,000 for joint filers. Single-filer assumptions underlie the table.

Bracket
Dividend Rate
Taxable Net
Roth Advantage Per Year
10-Year Advantage

22%
15%
$15,287
$2,698
$26,977

24%
15%
$15,287
$2,698
$26,977

32%
18.8%
$14,604
$3,381
$33,811

37%
23.8%
$13,704
$4,280
$42,804

With qualified payers, the 22% and 24% brackets come out the same. The cost rises once the surtax and the 20% rate apply. A 37% filer holding these blue chips gives up about as much as a 24% filer holding ordinary-income payers.

Compounding Turns $2,698 Into $80,000

If the annual $2,698 is reinvested at a modest 4%, the Roth advantage grows to $32,389 after 10 years and $80,333 after 20. If you skip reinvesting, the 20-year total would be $53,954. These figures leave out price appreciation and dividend increases. Given the growth records above, they likely understate the permanent cost of holding these shares outside a Roth.

What to Do Before Your Next Filing

Pull last year’s 1099-DIV and apply your actual qualified rate, including the 3.8% surtax if your income is above the threshold, to every blue chip you hold outside a tax-advantaged account.
Rank your Roth space by dollars of tax saved, not by yield alone.
