All nine people on board a Learjet 60 jet died in a \u201ccataclysmic\u201d crash in Florida on Sunday afternoon, officials said.<\/p>\n

The flight, which departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, crashed near Cresthaven, a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, around 12:50 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said.<\/p>\n

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said all nine on the flight died. He called the crash a \u201chorrific tragedy\u201d on social media<\/a>, adding, \u201cPlease join me in praying for the families and loved ones of those we lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

The identities of the people on board have not been released.<\/p>\n

Video showed a crater in the middle of a road engulfed in flames. <\/p>\n

In distressing air traffic control audio, a woman can be heard saying, \u201cMayday, mayday. We\u2019re descending 10,000 feet per minute.\u201d<\/p>\n

She later frantically yells, saying the jet was descending at 20,000 feet per minute.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna crash into the ground 722 Bravo Delta,\u201d she can be heard saying, followed by a scream.<\/p>\n

Only about two minutes earlier, she had reported experiencing \u201clight, clear ice\u201d but said it was \u201cmanageable,\u201d and described \u201cmoderate turbulence.\u201d She later reported, \u201cWe\u2019re picking up precipitation\u201d and requested to climb in altitude. <\/p>\n

A flood watch was in place Sunday for southern Florida, with numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms forecast to continue through Monday, according to the National Weather Service<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt looked like a missile going down. It left a big crater on the side of the road,\u201d DeSantis told reporters after the crash.<\/p>\n

He said the crash spewed a large amount of debris that spanned a \u201cpretty significant distance\u201d but that there were no reports of anyone on the ground being injured or killed.<\/p>\n

The aircraft is registered to an LLC in Delaware, according to FAA records. <\/p>\n

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.<\/p>\n

The Palm Beach County Sheriff\u2019s Office said an aircraft incident was under investigation in the area of Military Trail, and all northbound and southbound lanes were closed until further notice.<\/p>\n

Residents of a mobile home park near the wreckage site were being evacuated, said Joel Flores, commissioner for Palm Beach County\u2019s third district.<\/p>\n
