Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., suffered a stroke on Saturday. His prognosis is excellent, according to his office. His case illustrates the importance of knowing the warning signs of a stroke. <\/p>\n
The American Stroke Association says following the six letters in the acronym BE FAST \u2014 can help save stroke victims and prevent permanent brain damage.<\/p>\n
Murphy, 53, had the “A” for “arm weakness” \u2014 he felt numbness in his arm while he was at his son’s hockey game, according to a statement from his staff. And they said he acted quickly to get care \u2014 that’s the “T” for “time.” <\/p>\n Being seen by medical professionals as soon as possible \u2014 be fast! \u2014 gives people the best shot at survival and full recovery.<\/p>\n Here are all six of the stroke-spotting signs<\/a> in the BE FAST acronym, according to the American Stroke Association:<\/p>\n B \u2013 BALANCE loss <\/p>\n Dizzyness, trouble walking or a sudden loss of balance are all signs that a stroke may be occurring.<\/p>\n E \u2013 EYE changes <\/p>\n Is the person having trouble with their vision? Blurred vision, double vision or loss of sight in one eye are important symptoms.<\/p>\n F \u2013 FACE drooping <\/p>\n Ask the person to smile. Is their smile uneven? Numbness or drooping on one side of the face is a symptom.<\/p>\n A \u2013 ARM weakness <\/p>\n Numbness in one arm, as Murphy had, is a symptom. Weakness is too. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift down?<\/p>\n S \u2013 SPEECH difficulty <\/p>\n Trouble talking is another common symptom. Can the person repeat a simple sentence? Is their speech slurred or hard to understand?<\/p>\n T \u2013 TIME to call 911 <\/p>\n If you or someone you are with is experiencing these symptoms, call 911 as soon as you can. Getting care quickly is very important for survival and to minimize long-term effects.<\/p>\n A stroke happens when<\/a> blood flow to or within the brain is interrupted. It can happen when an artery is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.
